Heads Ten In Seaway Handicap Carries 115 in Raceway Feature For Ohio-Bred Three-Year-Olds i By DON GRISHAM Staff Correspondent RACEWAY PARK. Toledo, Ohio May 13. — The second running of the $2,000 Sea-, way Handicap is the center of attraction | as this course winds up its semi-final week | of racing. Top weight of 115 pounds has I been given to Mrs. J. A. Warkentin's Bay | Ben W., for the six-furlongs sprint which j is restricted to Ohio-bred three-year-olds, i Bay Ben W., an altered son of Omission from the Nedayr mare, Cressanna, has one winning effort to his credit here when he turned back a field of allowance performers at 4 furlongs. On two other occasions, he ' has been close up. Sure to earn a measure of support in the [ Seaway is Mable Leckey's Laconic, who t draws a one pound pull from Bay Ben W., J at 114. Laconic is an invader from Beulah I Park where he accounted for one race. He ' arrived several days ago and was turned | over to trainer Richard R. Perl and logged i a creditable work over an "off" track. Among the high weights at 1 1 1 pounds in the field of 10 is John Lightle's Sea Vee Ten. The Washington, Ohio-owned son of One Alone left the maiden ranks at this oval in an impressive victory last month and followed 'up with two sterling efforts, i Trainer E. H. Bryan, the Paulding, Ohio sportsman, will send out the only coupling in the Seaway when he dispatches K. E. Bryan's Night Melody and Night Code. The former gets in with 105 and the latter, a recent victor here, with an imporst of 113. Night Code has been postward once here and trimmed a limit field of maidens. Two Ascot Park invaders are on hand. Gordon McCullough arrived with Dr. Daniel Sterns' Abating, 110 pounds; and Silvio Annunziata came in with Miss Pro. 109. The latter is the property of Annabelle Russe of Youngstown. Completing the Seaway are A. L. Baugh-man's Dotty Night, 105: Alfonso Sarmento's Be Square 108 and the Newmac Stable's ' Fast Nighter 106. The Ohio Handicap is the secondary feature and the 8V2 furlongs event drew seven routers including the local favorites Vault's Ration and Hackamore. W. L. Hardesty's Vault's Ration is the high-weight at 121 and deservingly so, since he has won seven of his 10 starts this year. Ben Matkins Hackamore gets in with 118 I and Ed Davis" Johnny Domino with 117.! Both fell victim to Vault's Ration in the Livonia Handicap here last Saturday. Others in the Ohio are. Har-Lo-Mc 117, a stablemate to Johnny Domino; Mrs. Laura Hamill's Entangler 114, John La-phere's Mr. Bruce 113 and Green River Stable's Guy's Birthday, the lightweight at 108. General Manager Ralph Matkin feels that Saturdays program is the best card ever offered at one of his tracks in the Toledo area. In addition to two handicaps, it includes a pair of good claiming events plus an additional route race that attracted a well balanced field. Numbers 1, 3, Lucky at Ascot Numbers 1 , 3, Lucky at Ascot ASCOT PARK, Ohio, May 13.— Friday the 13th meant nothing to 449 fans at Ascot today as they shared a $42.40 Daily Double payoff with the winning combination 1 and 3. Ten ticket holders scoffed at the jinx numbers and bought $10 tickets worth $212 with Mollie Huston and Norma's Star the winners of the respective first and sec-and races and each, was a non-winner prior to the races today. Balmoral Opens Monday: Renew Six-Furlong Tri-State Stakes ► « ,,..,. ........... Balmoral Opens Monday THOMAS E. TROTTER— Racing secretary at Balmoral-Arlington-Washington. Renew Six-Furlong Tri-State Stakes Homewood Plant'sClubhouse Weatherized; Closed-Circuit TV Ready; First Post at 3:30 HOMEWOOD, 111., May 13.— Balmoral Jockey Club will launch the first phase of another 97-day co-ordinated season on Monday, when its sixth spring meeting opens at Washington Park. Feature of the nine-race program will be the $15,000 added Tri-State Stakes at 6 furlongs for three-year-olds. The 30-day Balmoral session will end Saturday, June 18. As previously announced by Balmoral President Hubert E. Howard, the meeting will again follow the pattern of late afternoon racing introduced last year. First post on weekdays will be 3:30 p. m. and 2 on Saturdays. The Memorial Day program. May 30, will start at 1:30. Nine races will be offered each day throughout the Balmoral stand. The same format will prevail during an additional two weeks, June 20 through July 2, at the Homewood track, when the Arlington Park Jockey Club opens its 36-day summer meeting. Thereafter, Chicagoland racing moves crosstown to Arlington Park on July 4 for the final 24 days at the home track, through July 30. On August 1, Washing- j ton Park Jockey Club begins its 31-da^ ' meeting at Arlington and runs through Labor Day. September 5. Ultimate in Fan Comfort Washington Park has assured the ulti-mate in fan comfort for Balmoral's spring session. A completely "sealed-in-glass" clubhouse, which will be heated in cool weather and air-conditioned in warm j weather, and a massive closed-circuit tele- j vision network, with large -screen receivers ; located on every floor of both clubhouse and grandstand as well as in the dining rooms, will be introduced. In addition, there are escalators, paved parking, free bus service to and from the ( far parking areas, improved restaurant i facilities and a newly-painted grandstand j interior in sparkling white. Monday's Tri-State touches off a pro-gram, of 30 stakes scheduled for the co-ordinated spring-summer meeting. The Tri-State salutes northern Illinois' recently completed tollway and expressway systems i which have been a boon to racegoers. Monday's $15,000 Tri-State looms every bit as exciting as last year's inaugural running which found William G. Gilmore's Fightin Indian defeating On-and-On. Nominated for the 6 furlongs dash are Miss Verdis Havard's fleet filly, Pierpontella ; Hasty House Farms' Prince Charger and Eric Ericson's Good Joy, among others. First major stakes presentation of the co-ordinated season will be set for June 11. added Citation Handicap set for June 11. In all 12 added money events, plus a stake for Illinois-bred horses, will feature the Washington Park segment of 42 days through July 2. The $50,000 Star and Stripes will highlight festivities on July 4 with the opening of Arlington Park and the final 55 days of the combined season. Balmoral's first week of sport at Washington Park will be highlighted next Saturday by the $25,000 added Clang Handicap, also at 6 furlongs, but for three-year-olds and up. The Clang is the initial step in a series of stakes pointing to the $50,000 added Citation Handicap, later to the $50.-000 added Equipose Mile and the $100,000 added Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park. Before the spring-summer season is finished, such traditional stakes as the $100,000 added Arlington Classic and $100,-000 added American Derby for three-year-olds; the $100,000 added Arlington and Washington Park Futurities for two-year-olds; the $100,000 Washington Park Handicap for older horses and the $50,000 added Arlington Handicap and Stars and Stripes for grass horses will be presented. The attractive program will lure some of the nation's ranking stables, horses and jockeys. Already at Washington Park and awaiting the opening gong are formidable public strings trained by Arnold Winick, Del Carroll, Henry Forrest, Vester R. "Tennessee" Wright, J. H. "Slim" Pierce and Larry H. Thompson. They are augumented by William Hal Bishop, Kerr Stables, Hasty House Farms, Jacnot Stable, Reverie Knoll Farm, Spring Hill Farm. Fred W. Hooper and the Kennedy-Veale Stable. In terms of horseflesh, Chicago fans will be seeing Kentucky Derby winner Venetian Way and his arch rivals Bally Ache and Vital Force; the grass runners Tudor Era and Manassas; Calumet Farm's On-and-On; William S. Miller's Better Bee; Silver Creek Farm's ranking sprinter Roman Colonel, plus a budding crop of untested but aristocratically bred two - year - old candidates for the rich Futurities. Editorial Comment EDITORIAL 1 Comment The tragic death of Prince Aly Khan removes one of the most important and dynamic figures in thoroughbred racing. Since the death of his father, the Aga Khan, Prince Aly owned one of the greatest thoroughbred racing and breeding establishments in the world. The publicity he received in the tabloids was primarily that as a playboy. To his friends he was a charming and highly intelligent person. His knowledge of thoroughbred breeding was probably unsurpassed by anyone. The contribution he and his father made to thoroughbred breeding in Europe and in the United States is permanent. In recent years he was a frequent visitor to race tracks in this country. He will be missed. He lived and died on the front pages. Though Venetian Way scored a decisive victory in the Kentucky Derby, the three-year-old division is still in a state of flux. There is every indication that not until the Belmont Stakes will a clear picture of their true quality emerge. There is also an element of uncertainty because the Kentucky State Racing Commission has permitted the use of Butazolidin, while in the state of Maryland and virtually all other states on the Eastern seaboard, the drug Ls prohibited. There is, of course, no evidence as to whether Butazolidin was administered to any of the horses who started in the Derby, but the possibility certainly exists. A There are few sporting events that are affected by the weather to a greater degree than the Kentucky Derby. The size of the crowd depends entirely on the number of people that seek admission to the infield, which has no shelter whatsoever. All the seats in the clubhouse and grandstand, which total nearly 50,000, are reserved and sold several months before the running of the race. All purchasers of reserved seats are given an opportunity during the winter to repurchase their tickets. Only a small percentage fail to do so and it is these seats that are immediately made available to the thousands who seek them. It is obvious, therefore, that when the weather is cool or when there is rain, that the number of people who are willing to expose themselves to the elements is greatly reduced. There is no question that the popularity of the Derby has never been greater. It is estimated that if 100,000 reserved seats were available they would be sold without any difficulty. The victory of V. E. "Red'' Berry in the San Antonio Democratic primary as state representative in the Texas legislature last week, was a triumph for the advocates of a renewal of thoroughbred racing in the state. Berry conducted his campaign almost entirely on a platform to revive thoroughbred racing. He won a decisive victory over James McKay, a former president of the San Antonio Bar Association. It is paradoxical that the state of Texas, which has so many prominent thoroughbred breeders, including Robert Kleberg's great King Ranch, should be without racing. Berry's victory is a clear indication that there is strong support for thoroughbred racing in the Lone Star state, which may produce results in the next legislature. —J. S. P. Appointment of John G. Besides, we should think Bally Ache might tie up a leg and beat those horses. This is Friday the 13th, the blackest many of us who move in the little world of racing can recall. You may remember that several weeks ago in Florida we were being passionate about Royal Native and big Bill MacDonald recklessly asked our notion of a proper mate for her. Since Prince Aly Khan and his stud manager Madame Vuillier bred more classic winners than anybody else in late years, our thoughts in the matter were dicussed with them. They were our sounding board. The Prince took the pedigrees of the mare and stallions under consideration to France with him, so that he and Madame Vuillier might work on them in their spare time, applying the "Vuillier system." In the morning's post was a letter from Paris' Neuilly-s-Seine. Most of our mail begins : "Dear Sir, you cad . . ." .Aly wrote: "My Dear Charlie, Madame Vuillier and I have looked at the matings carefully, and Royal Native undoubtedly crosses best with Bold Ruler. This is a very good mating indeed and has the following inbreeding: Nearco 3/3, Mumtaz 3/4, Fair Play 5/4, and brings in the new blood of Solario, Sir Gallahad III. and Rabelais. The next best mating is with Swaps, which has the following inbreeding: Gainsborough 4/5, The Tetrarch 5/6, Phararis 5/6, Sir Gallahad III. 5/3 and brings in the new blood of Nearco, Mumtaz and Begum and Rabelais. The matings with Ribot and Round Table are not particularly good. With Ribot there is an inbreeding of. Pharos 4/4. 1 hope these remarks will be of use to you, and looking forward to seeing you soon, All best wishes to you, always, Yours Aly Khan." Then there followed a secretarial footnote: "Letter dictated by H. ., H. Prince Aly Khan, but not signed owing to unexpected absence." Morning Headlines Relate Fatal Crash Beside the mail lay the morning papers, and staring at us from The Sun's Page One, was this headline: "Aly Khan, Playboy-Envoy, Killed in Crash Near Paris." This tragic coincidence gave us a turn such as we have not experienced since the untimely death of Bill Woodward Jr. It is shocking, and leaves a void in international racing and breeding that cannot be filled. Practically everyone in racing here, in the British Isles and in France enjoyed this prince of good fellow's friendship, admired him as a sportsman, and respected his profound knowledge of the thoroughbred and thoroughbred breeding. He helped to forward international competition, with studs in France, Ireland, Venezuela and a band of mares in the United States, at John Galbreath's place. He sent the first genuine classicist to Laurel's International in the unfortunate Rose Royale, and provided the only foreign element in the first Man o' War, when he ran Sallymount, despite the horse's inability to handle the soft stuff. He flew to France and England full of hope for his champion filly Petite Etoile, for whom he last fall rejected 280,000 American dollars, in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and of Charlottesville and Empire in the Epsom Derby. Whether their engagements are transferable, or what distribution will be made of the priceless bloodstock at Gilltown, Marly-le-Ville, Sheshoon and his half-dozen or so remaining studs we do not know and shall not attempt to guess. He had a string of more than 50 in Alec Head's pastoral Chantilly yard, another group with Noel Murless in England. Among the horses he prized most is the French sire Prince Bio, whom he described as "the best stallion in Europe." Concur on Choice of Bold Ruler Bill MacDonald really ought to breed Royal Native to Bold Ruler. Not because he was our first choice but because the mating had the advocacy also of the world's greatest authority on bloodlines. In prefering Mrs. Phipps' stallion, there is no invidious comparison of him with the other sires mentioned. It is simply that he strikes us, and impressed Aly and Madame Vuillier as the most suitable for this particular $250,000 broodmare prospect. The Preakness Prep, as we have so brashly mentioned above, looks to have all the more cut-and-dried elements of a foregone conclusion for Bally Ache. This despite the discrepancies in weights, something to which he and other colts of his age who have money and position must accustom themselves. Trainer Jimmy Pitt, the most disarming Rebel to come out of the Volunteer State since O'Neil Sevier, tried conditioning Bally Ache for the Derby over the course on which it was to be decided. This seemed a splendid idea at the time, the Downs and Keeneland are so unalike. But only in theory, not in practice, and "Old Ironsides may have been a trifle short as a consequence. Taking no chances, Len Fruchtman's colt will have an extended prep in this week-end's dress rehearsal. Bud Bigger-staff always has felt that Bally Ache would have won The Garden State could he have had the experience of a distance race just in front of it, and this was the pro-cedure before the Flamingo and Florida Derby. New Jersey: Betsy Ross Victory Should Not Come Easly Fitzsimmons Has Irish Jay in Peak Form Staretta and Patty's Song Posses Speed William C. Phillips New Jersey By William C. Phillips Betsy Ross Victory Should Not Come Easy Fitzsimmons Has Irish Jay in Peak Form Staretta and Patty's Song Possess Speed GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 13.— Fourteen aristocratic young fillies were named for Saturday's ninth running of the Betsy Ross Stakes. A 6-furlong dash with all the elements to thoroughly test the speed and fibre of the contestants; the type of race in which a victory honestly earned will carry with it a bona fide early placement at the top of the division. As an aside, the Betsy Ross will also have a monetary prize of $30,950, from which the winner will receive $19,792.50 as clear profit, if all enter the fray. The recognized leader of the moment is Wheatley Stable's Irish Jay. The daughter of Double Jay — Irish Witch, by Bold Irishman, will shoulder the high weight of 121 pounds on Saturday and be ridden by Henry Moreno. She is engaging several new challengers with her invasion here from New York, however, and it would not be surprising if they managed to open a fresh chapter to this season's book of three -year-old fillies. In fact, it would not surprise this observer one whit if Irish Jay finds one or more rivals she is unable to handle here on Saturday. It is going to require a shifty filly to lead the pack, and the slightest hesitation on the part of any of the contestants will make a great deal of difference. It is regrettable that Mrs. Frances A. Genter's My Dear Girl was not considered by her trainer to be up to the race, perhaps it is more correct to repeat the trainer's statement that he believed the Betsy Ross came too soon after her debut at Aqueduct on Tuesday, but he was aware of the short period of time when he stated she would definitely start in the Betsy Ross the day before her New York race, and we can only conclude that the stable was disappointed in her debut. If the juvenile filly champion of last year is not up to a top performance it is just as well she is not in the Betsy Ross, because there are several lassies here who are honed to an edge. Fine Performance in Comely Stakes Apparently there is no question but what veteran Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons has Irish Jay at a peak. She lost command in the final furlong of her season's debut in the 6-furlong Prioress early last month and finished second to Salt Lake, but returned on May 4 and gamely outfinished Improve at 7 furlongs in the Comely. She conceded her closest rival six pounds and completed the race under 121-pound impost in 1:23, which is only three-fifths of a second slower than the Aqueduct record. There also is little doubt that she is at her best when she is fresh. As a juvenile she won her first three. The first, a maiden race, by 15 lengths; the Fashion by six lengths, and a division of the Schuylerville by three-quarters of a length. In the last one she defeated Heavenly Body, who was another early leader in the division. Irish Jay finished fourth to My Dear Girl in The Gardenia here last fall, and had the positions been reversed, she would be the one wearing the filly crown. Trainer Tommy J. Kelly informed the writer last autumn in Kentucky that he had an outstanding filly in Leonard P. Sasso's Staretta. "As fast as any .filly I've seen," he said. She has offered some proof for his statements this spring with victories in her first two starts, and she set the pace for a 6-furlong time of 1:09% before dropping back to third behind Irish Jay in the Comely. When it comes to speed, however, she is not the only one in the Betsy Ross. Joseph M. Roebling's Be Gracious is reputed to have phenomenal early foot. The English-bred daughter of the fashionable Grey Sovereign cost her owner a reported $50,000. Her two-year-old record in .England, although good, does not appear outstanding, but she impressed observers in New York when she finished fourth in tough, open company in her recent American debut. Patty's Song Has Inside Post Wilson and Davis, Jr.'s Patty's Song can clip along about as fast as anybody, and she has the advantage of an inside post position. She won three races in Kentucky this spring, and we can state from observing her efforts last autumn that she should have been the winner of at least two races in which she was beaten. Aunt Rosita and Our Jody also have speed and inside post positions, although they may not be as shifty as Patty's Song, and Julie Kate also will be able to save ground breaking from the inside. The latter is the stretch-runner of the group. Sainted Devil is another fast one leaving the gate and she is on the extreme outside. Anybody seeing R.'H. Farringer's Blonde Demond gallop home five and one-half lengths in front, eased up, in her prep for the stake last week will have to give her a chance. The race was every bit as good as it appears on paper, although it was a small field she beat, and it is to be seen if she will be able to maneuver as well in the larger group. Her poor efforts of last year were caused by tender ankles. It may be difficult to like Miss Mary V. Fisher's Right Smart on paper, but the writer retains vivid memories of the 18-length victory she registered in her debut at Keeneland last autumn, and he has faith that the daughter of Cortil may yet prove herself the superior sprinter of the division. California: Curry Tells Aims of Rule Discussion Could Clarify a Confusing Situation Foundation for Further NASRC Study Oscar Otis California • By Oscar Otis Curry Tells Aims of Rule Discussion Could Clarify a Confusing Situation Foundation for Further NASRC Study HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 13.— A serious, high level discussion on all phases of the controversial rules governing stimulation and kindred racing will transpire here Monday as Neil Curry, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, hears invited speakers tell their stand, and why, and in addition, comments from the floor ( public) will be entertained. "This conference is the outgrowth of some of our NASRC sessions in Mexico City," explains Curry, "and we of the California board have had in mind for some time a study that might lead to clarification which would be desirable. This Monday meeting started out as rather a small project, so to speak, but it has snowballed advance interest to a point that I myself am astonished and amazed. For instance, commissioners from Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Arizona have advised they will attend as interested parties along with our own commission members. Whether this particular meeting will solve anything remains to be seen, but the California commissioners are going into the hearings with an open mind. The very least that can be expected in the way of accomplishment, however, is that this meeting will lay the groundwork for further consideration of the problem of our NASRC committee on rules and stimulation and hence I believe that by the time the next NASRC convention rolls around, a true picture of the whole problem can be presented. And, once you know what the problem is, in clear definition, then sound steps can be taken to arrive at the proper answer." Kentucky's Rule Simple and Specific Just before leaving Kentucky, we chatted with William H. May, chairman of the Kentucky Racing Commission, who told us, "Down in Mexico City, a lot of people told me privately that they admired our Kentucky rule as being right and workable, but they didn't vote that way on the convention floor. And so far as I know, no member of our commission is giving any ftiought to changing ours." The Kentucky rule is simple and specific. Barred are all alkaloids, and anaesthetics as defined by the federal, state, or local authorities, and all stimulants as defined by accepted scientific publications on the subject in both the field of pharmacy and veterinary medicine. It is the latter clause on which Kentucky predicates its case. It refuses to set itself up as an authority on such a drug as "Buty," and rather relies on the opinion of the experts in their own fields. The panel is a distinguished one and includes Spencer Drayton of TRA and TRPB, general Wayne O. Koester of the American Society of Equine Practitioners, Irving Gushen of the HBPA (come back west, Irv, the flu epidemic is over), Robert Vessiny representing the racing chemists, and James Stewart, vice-president of Hollywood Park but in this instance representing the Federation of California Racetracks. It is just possible that the growing split in opinion between the veterinarians on the one hand and the chemists on the other may come into the open Monday and if so, a good thing it would be for this is a matter that must be cleared up sooner or later. The vets, and this writer have signed, written statements on the subject, feel the chemists have gone overboard. And one national turf leader tells me, but off the record, the "chemical supervision has gotten out of hand and is far afield of its original purpose, i. e., the detection of first, alkaloids, and second, stimulants." Problem of Public Relations This man adds, "It is basically a problem in public relations. Saying anything under such conditions as they are today simply invites a highly critical and often bordering on the hysterical barrage of remarks that we would sponsor a return to the old days of no supervision at all. But I know that no one in his right mind would ever want a return to the old days and rather, if a common sense procedure could be worked out that would protect the public first, the rights of the vets to prescribe within the definition of the pharmaceutical manuals medication that is legal, it would logically be a step into a new era of sound racing controls. But the decision as to what are and what are not proper in the treatment of thoroughbreds is one that must be arrived at sooner or later and I say the sooner the better for the situation as it is, is going to give racing many unhappy moments in the future as well as in the past." Commissioner Curry is devoting a surprisingly larse part of his time to racing affairs and, being a busy executive in his own field, trucking, it is rather remarkable that he not only launches a deal like Monday's panel discussion, but also is available most any time for anyone in raoing to talk out a problem on which he might be of assistance. His realization is that the transcription of the panel proceedings would form a logical starting point for a more widespread survey. The situation is full of paradoxes. For instance, if certain medicines are barred and the chemist picks them up, why a 48-hour rule at all? And why, if Buta-zoladin is the evil that some insist it is, why did California, in barring its use with a 48-hour period, put the effective date of the order well ahead of date announcement? Okay today boys, but next month, you must stop this awful practice?
