Cicero, 111., May 11.— Seven three-year-olds are entered in Thursday's featured seventh race, the Bob Scobey Purse. The headliner is an allowance affair and will be contested from the 6V2 furlongs chute, with a purse of $3,200 being offered. Sharing about equal top billing with the day's main event is the eighth race, a mile test endowed with the same total purse money that has attracted eight starters entered for claiming prices of $8,-500 down to $8,000. The Bob Scobey Purse will see topweight of 120 pounds carried by F. B. Anschutz' Idaho Step, who has shown steady improvement and returned to winning ways in his last outing. The good looking colt will seek to repeat that victory under the handling of R. L. Barnett. leading rider of this meeting. Count Chuck Bishop Hopeful Stronger threats, to the Anschutz color-bearer appear to be the Southern Bell Sta ble's Nizami's Image. Leo Weinberger's Francean, and the W. H. Bishop Stable, Inc.'s Count Chuck. The field is rounded out by John E. Hughes' Special Stone, a winner over lesser grade at this meeting: Wallace Strong's Valley's Pride, who will be making his first outing here this spring, and T. W. Sterne's Alot O Market. The Potato Chip Farm's Count Swedak, a local favorite, appears nicely placed to garner his first victory of the year in the eighth race. He will be ridden by William Zakoor and meets keen competition in Marion H. Van Berg's entry consisting of Nivrag and Dashing Squaw. Owner Bishop will send out his Limoges, who must be strongest considered, others in the event being Mrs. Carl Greenes Sa-bena II., John E. Hughes' Deecie and M. Moskowitz' Willygee, who was claimed in his last outing. The Joe-Anna Stable's Retobaco II. and W. W. Rogers' Irish Love complete the field. Ohio Championship Has 32 Nominees: Sunny Boy S. Trainers Wright and Thompson to Race at Balmoral Meeting: Former, Tops in Number of Wins in '59, Has 40 Head; Norris Stable Also Coming ► —————— __—___«____ dim « 4 » . Trainers Wright and Thompson To Race at Balmoral Meeting j i ' Former, Tops in Number of 4 Wins in '59, Has 40 Head; Norris Stable Also Coming HOMEWOOD, 111., May 11.— Vester R. "Tennessee" Wright, the nation's leading trainer in 1959 for the third time in four years, and Laurence H. Thompson, who will be back on the Chicago scene after a year's absence, will race their highly-regarded public strings during the 97-day Arlington-Washington-Balmoral coordinated meeting, which Balmoral opens at Washington Park, Monday. Their thoroughbreds, added to an already imposing roll-call of horses, assure a spring-summer racing program whose day-to-day competitive potential will be the best in Chicago history. The 1960 stable roster also will be augmented by Spring Hill Farm, owned by James D. Norris; Isaac Blumberg's Sunny Blue Farm, which includes Kentucky Derby winner Venetian Way; Fred W. Hooper; J. Graham Brown; Reverie Knoll Farm; Hasty House Farm and others. Wright has a contingent of 40 horses. Most prominent among his patrons are James L. Paddock and T. A. Grissom. His better-known charges include a pair of hard-hitting three-year-olds. Lurullah, who was third in both the Arlington Park and Washington Park Futurities last year, and Eight Again. He also trains Toby's Brother, three-year-old son of Alsab for whom Grissom paid $28,500 at the recent Keeneland sales. Wright Had 172 Winners Last Year Wright's 172 winners last year included 23 that gave him the trainer's title for the Arlington Park phase of the coordinated meeting and 11 during the Balmoral segment, in which he was fourth back of owner-trainer William Hal Bishop. Bishop, already has indicated he will have 60 horses here this year. His 161 first in 1959 ranked him third nationally. Thompson, who campaigned in the east last year, will have a public string of 35. His owners include Chicagoan Modie J. Spiegel Jr.'s Alamode Stable; H. F. Kri-mendahl. Donald McKeller, I. J. Collins and Millard Waldheim's Bwamazon Farm. High on the list of private stables that will be quartered here is Morris' Spring Hill Farm, whose 20 thoroughbreds are trained by Paul Kelley. The total will be increased with the arrival of three imports from Ireland. S. Bryant Ott, another veteran handler of public strings, also will bring in 25 thoroughbreds, among which will be the five two-year-olds being raced under the new partnership of Newspaper Publishers Marshall Field Jr. (Chicago Sun-Times — Chicago Daily News and John S. Knight (Knight Newspapers) under the banner of the Fourth Estate Stable. Ott also conditions for the noted Kentucky breeder-owner, Leslie Combs II., and for Mrs. James Dunham. Sunny Blue Farm's contingent, trained by Vic Sovinski, will total 20 by the time Venetian Way gets here from his "Triple Crown" chores. The Blumberg three-year-old will race throughout the remainder of the Arlington -Washington season and is a prime candidate for the July 23 running of the $100,000 Arlington Classic and the August 27 renewal of the $100,000 Derby. Chester Bowles, whose stable includes J. Graham Brown's string, will race 25 horses at the 97-day meet, as will Freeman Keyes' Reverie Knoll Farm, trained by Frank Sanders. Allie Reuben's Hasty House Farm, always a powerful contender at the coordinated meeting has bolstered his 1960 stable, with trainer Harry Trotsek preparing some 35 runners for Reuben and himself. The record-breaking roll call of stables also includes such top rated public strings as Arnold N. Winick. with 65 horses: Del Carroll. 60; Henry Forrest. 40; T. W. Kelley. 35, and J. H. "Slim" Pierce and Stanley Rieser with 30 each. Largest owner-trainer stable in America, the 60-or-so thoroughbreds racing under the William Hal Bishop colors, also is currently training at Washington Park for the Balmoral opening, and will provide unusually strong competition for his perennial rivals for trainer honors. LAWRENCE H. THOMPSON — Is returning to the Chicago scene after a year's absence. Free Admission Today at Raceway Park Track: Seven Routers Go Postward in Appreciation Day Feature Don Grisham Free Admission Today At Raceway Park Track Seven Routers Go Postward In Appreciation Day Feature By DON GRISHAM Staff Correspondent RACEWAY PARK, Toledo, Ohio, May 11. — Seven seasoned routers will highlight Raceway Park's initial Appreciation Day, Thursday, when they match strides in the Grove City Purse at 1 1-16 miles. The event has been designated as the eighth race and will carry a purse of $1,200. In accordance with the conditions of the Grove City, which is restricted to non -winners of three races this year, three horses have received top impost of 119 pounds. They are Anthony Gangemi's L'Script, Mrs. Amy Condon's Colonel Jett and Maurice Adelhart's Seapoise. The Detroit-owned Seapoise is expected to draw the role of favorite. The six-year-old Shannon II. gelding has accounted for his last two races, including a 9-f urlong route here 10 days ago. He faces stern opposition from the corner of Colonel Jett. The latter trimmed fields of good routers on two recent occasions. His last effort was May 4 when he beat a band of $2,000 company home. Not to be overlooked in the Grove City is Anthony Gangemi's L'Script. He could not handle Johnny Domino in the Flint Purse, but still turned in a commendable effort to be runner-up. The bay gelding favors the distance and, in the past, soft underfooting has proved to be no obstacle. The son of By Conscript raced well at Sunshine Park and it would be only a mild upset should he prove best here tomorrow. Completing the field is W. E. "Pat" Mitchell's Beach, 114; George Kilgore's Alicia Ann, 114; Shirley Tsarnas' Lou Blue, and Robert Kohlhorst's Achilleus, 114. All of these have won at this meeting. General manager Ralph Matkin has ordered a "free gate" for Appreciation Day. He announced that two television sets and a portable radio will be awarded to three lucky fans. Leone; Another Story Illinoisan Races One Horse-Hill Country Ailing Ex-Stakes Winner Rewards Patience Teddy Cox Chicagoland By Teddy Cox 1 Another Joseph A. Leone; Another Story lllinoisan Races One Horse — Hill Country Ailing Ex-Stakes Winner Rewards Patience SPORTSMAN'S PARK, Cicero, 111., May 11.— Joseph A. Leone has the gift of omnipresence as a turf personality. He operates out of Matheun, Mass., and Chicago, 111., at the same time. He deals incidentally in Cinderella stories in connection with his stakes star, and now sire, Rockcastle, purchased by him from the Calumet Farm for a virtual pittance. These stories he spins orally by virtue of having developed Rockcastle into a ranking star. This Mr. Leone is a retired New England businessman and has the apple of his eye, Rockcastle, stationed at B. A. Da-rio's farm in Rhode Island, where he has become a popular stud horse. Then there is the Joseph A. Leone of local vintage, a personable little fellow who calls himself a racing progam salesman. He has charge of the turf menu hustlers on "all Chicagoland tracks. His official designation is that of steward, or field director, for the Chicago office of the Theater and Amusement Building Janitors Union, which is affiliated with the CIO-AFL. He is the proud owner of a one-horse stable, and at the moment figures he, too, has one change in a million of possessing a veritable Rockcastle. The lone thoroughbred in his possession is Hill Country, a beautifully bred son of Heliopolis — Army Colors, by Man o' War. Hill Country was the winner of the Kentucky Jockey Stakes of 1957, value to the winner of $34,235. As the result of this impressive achievement, he became the early favoite for the 1958 Louisiana Derby and a ranking candidate for the Kentucky Derby of that year. Hill Country, however, proved a bitter disappointment. At no stage of his career after his brilliant KJC Stakes triumph did he ever duplicate that effort. Writer's Words of Praise Recalled "I'll tell you a strange story about Hill Country," said the program-dispersing Mr. Leone this morning. "Whether you know it or not, it was you, Mr. Cox, who was responsible for my claiming of Hill Country. You were covering racing for your paper at the Fair Grounds during the winter of Hill Country's three-year-old year, and Chuckie Kratkoruky, who sells programs for me, remembers all of the nice things you wrote about Hill County. Then last May, Chuckie told me that Hill Country was entered to be claimed for $2,500 at Churchill Downs, and suggested that I claim him. I had a horse on the same program, and through the grapevine I heard that my horse would be claimed. "I did not want to be put out of business, so I ordered my trainer, "Pinchy" (Euall) Wyatt to take the horse for me. I would never have claimed the horse if Chuckie had not remembered reading the many favorable things you wrote about him in your column. Our first impressions after we claimed the horse, however, were not what I would call elation. 'Pinchy' had warned me against claiming him. Said he had all sorts of 'knocks' against the horse. But I told him it was my money, and that I would be willing to accept any possible losses. We went to the barn that evening, and what we saw made us sad. Hill Country was the 'bag of bones' that you read about. He turned his head to the feed tub, and you could hang your hat on his hips. "We called a vet. He couldn't find anything wrong. We knew it wasn't malnutrition, because his previous trainer, J. H. "Slim" Pierce, is one of the best trainers in the business. Then we called a horse dentist, who found an impacted tooth. When it was extracted, it must have been a great relief to the horse. The stuff that came out of the cavity was amazing and almost made us sick. It was a foul odor. It was then that Hill Country began to eat with relish. He munched his oats and ate like food was just coming Into style. Two Tracks, Two Races, Two Defeats "We ran him a week later for $3,500, a thousand more than we paid for him. He was beaten three lengths in front in the stretch, then tired and was beaten on the line. He finished second. "Pinchy" said he thought the poison from the infected tooth was still in his system. But we decided to send him to Delaware, and once again he tired after getting into a long lead. Still later he was kicked on his tendon coming out of the gate, and this forced us to send him to the farm. He was shipped to the Lexbrook Farm here in Illinois and was given a long rest. We took him to Oaklawn Park, but 'Pinchy' did not want. to run him because of a long series of bad track conditions. 'Monday, when I saw his name in the entries, I thought Pinchy had gone haywire. He told me the horse did not like the mud. and here he was entered when mud was assured. When I called 'Pinchy' he told me that while Hill Country did not like the Hot Springs mud, the mud at Sportsman's Park suited him fine. Now I figured I was going balmy. TJ.ien Pinchy' told me that Hill Country not only liked the Sportsman's Park mud, but that he would win in it. I told all of my program-sellers on the track. Most of them didn't believe me. They are handicappers, too. They did not figure that a horse I or gelding » could be away from the races since last July at Delaware Park and still come back and win — even against $2,500 platers." Well, this could easily be the beginning of another amazing story of the turf rather than the end of our interview with Chicago's particular brand of Joseph A. Leone. Hill Country walked his beat! He dashed out into the lead at the start and won off to himself — by four lengths. He was like shooting ducks. He paid $15. Leone through "hooking" his charge in a Daily Double that returned $115.20, "got out" on Hill Country. From here on everything will be gravy. Makes a good yarn, but I wonder how it's going to end? Venetian Way is expected to be the favorite at post time to model the MJC's six-feet long stole of Shasta daisies, painted to look like black-eyed Susans, after the May 21 classic, with $150,000 the world richest race in added monies. (It is estimated that actually John Schapiro's Washington D. Laurel is planning a new press box, to accommodate the increasing number of visiting newsmen for its Internationals. Pimlico vastly enlarged and remodelled its "tribune de la presse" several years ago. And now the Downs' Brownie . Leach is considering his track's Derby coverage in the midst of the "population explosion." The publicist says: "I have not counted them at all, but I know that I issued at least 1,080 credentials to newsmen, TV staffs and the radio people last Saturday. This is the largest number in Derby history, and I would say that more papers carried the story than ever heretofore. It was a simple enough one to write, Venetian Way saw to that. The accounts of the running were filed and cleared faster than at any time in my experience." Begin Planning Next Year's Derby The Kentucky Derby in 1961 will be decided on Saturday, May 5, for a prize of $125,000 added. . . . Officials of the Louisville club counted more reserved seat sales than ever before, but the attendance definitely was off, owing to the inclement weather, complete to rain and 50 degrees, during the morning hours. The innerfield crowd was sharply "off." . . . Isaac Blumberg directed that "the kids," as he calls his grandchildren and great grandchildren, 17 in number, each have a rose from Venetian Way's winner's circle garland. The charming custom of the alibi table breakfasts "on the house" in the old clubhouse will be resumed, though it has never been quite the same since the boarding house type table itself was removed. The Jockeys' Hall of Fame will be open to patrons throughout the MJC's Preakness week of sport. . . . Alfred Vanderbilt is expected from Europe in time to attend the Preakness if his Idolater is a starter, as seems likely at the writing. This Maryland-bred appears partial to courses in his native state. . . . Friends at the Big A when the Derby was decided tell us it was a pity for Royal Native to lose the Bed o' Roses. Hank Moreno may not fit her so well as Hartack, who was preoccupied at Churchill Downs that afternoon. California: Henrijan Owners Happy over Derby Try Debonair Displays Fine Three-Year-Olds Amerigo Now Eying the Arc De Triomphe Oscar Otis % v^ M California ' By Oscar Otis Henrijan Owners Happy Over Derby Try Debonair Displays Fine Three-Year-Olds Amerigo Now Eying the Arc de Triomphe HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 11.— Henrijan is back in California, apparently none the worse for wear by competing in the Kentucky Derby. and his owners, Mr. and Mrs. S. Henry Elmore tell me they are very, very happy he raced even though he finished last. Actually, Henrijan raced a bold 7 furlongs in the Derby and when he obviously was beaten, jockey Angel Valenzuela did not abuse him through the stretch. Considering that Henrijan raced off "nothing" i and must have been a short horse, the Derby effort puts him among 1 the top-ranking echelon of three- year-olds now in training in California. "Wouldn't have missed starting him for the world," Elmore and wife, Jan, told me coming West on the plane from Louisville. "We had shipped a long distance to run and as long as the horse was okay, we saw no reason not to give him his chance. "Besides, we wanted to find out how good a horse he was. We did. He probably would have raced a lot better on a fast track, and at Hollywood Park, he'll always find the track fact. The Kentuckians couldn't have been nicer. We hope to return some day for another try." Henry Elmore will get to Hollywood Park as often as time permits, but a true dirt farmer on his 3,000 acres of irrigated land near Brawley, he adds that "This is one of our busy seasons, which means we can't get to the track as often as we would like." Wealth of Stakes Opportunities This observer gained the solid opinion as early as February that this was the best year the West had ever known for three-year-olds as a group. And while some " of the developments have been disappointing and injuries and mishaps more frequent than average, this opinion is holding up rather well at this point and may be completely confirmed by the end of the Hollywood meeting, which offers colts six stakes with an added value of $275,000, and fillies three for added monies of $90,000. Fans will get an early peek at some of the quality three -year -olds come Saturday in the $25,000 added Debonair at 6 furlongs. Those entirely volatile, voluble and happy-go-lucky horsemen, the King Brothers, profess themselves to be "very high" on King Moishe, a three-year-old they purchased from Queen Elizabeth II. The Kings were in London to film a picture and after considerable negotiation, Her Majesty consented to sell. This horse at two, and under the name of Merioneth, had won a couple of modest stakes. The Kings got him for about $15,000, and upon the colt's arrival in the United States promptly changed his name. It develops the Queen heard .about it and, possibly confused or curious at the switch, asked her business manager to find out about it. Morrie King's explanation, duly forwarded through channels, was that "Merioneth" meant nothing in the United States, but almost everybody would recognize "King Moishe" as a tag befitting the King Brothers' stable. Her Majesty's reaction probably never will be known. Guard Against Distasteful Equine Names Speaking of names and referring to the distasteful, we learn from Hollywood's racing secretary Johnny Maluvius that either by cunning design or sheer accident (it has occurred both ways) a few names have been accepted by The Jockey Club in foreign language which, in their native tongue, are unprintable. When discovered, this information is provided The Jockey Club and the owners are asked to make a change. None has ever refused. The officials here learn of these vulgarities in peculiar ways. Last year, for instance, the Mexican consul in Los Angeles phoned to say that a non-starting two-year-old which had appeared on the work tab had, in Spanish, an obscene meaning. And just recently another was promptly changed when a Filipino bus boy, hearing the name, snickered as Maluvius was having breakfast. Trainer Harris Brown tells us he definitely has canceled plans to fly Amerigo to the Argentine for that $100,000 plus international stake late this month. Instead, he'll concentrate on a campaign in the States until late summer, then point for the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. "It is a sounder program for the horse," explains Broown, 'for his overseas flight will come at the close of a well-spaced stakes program rather than break his campaign in the summer to fly to Buenos Aires and back. This horse has something of a future in the stud and we have received a tentative offer from England, which would like him back and also have a firm offer from Leslie Combs. But Amerigo is by no means at the end of his racing career. If he stays sound, he'll race again next year, at six." Horses and People: Dave Erb is a welcome addition to the ranks of the Hollywood jockey colony, forsaking New York for the season in order that he and his family may be closer to their Phoenix home for a spell. . . . Santa Anita Cap winner Linmold will be back to the races by mid-summer, according to trainer H. C. Mc-Bride. "He's minus a bit of bone in his foot," advises McBride, "but a few horses have undergone the same operation and have raced ably." The splint chip was removed just four weeks ago, and Linmold is beginning to gallop.
