LOUISVILLE Ky April 30 Final heavy training moves by the candidates Dispose Staretor and Swain voluble post mortem discussions of yesterdays Derby Trial Stakes in which Blue Pair defeated Whirlaway and exaggerated fears regarding the condition of Porters Cap and Little Beans highlighted events at Churchill Downs Wednesday morn ¬ ing as Louisville began filling up for Satur ¬ days sixtyseventh running of the 75000 Kentucky Derby DerbyWhile While Dispose and Staretor were working the full Derby distance of a mile and one quarter and Swain was going a mile and an eighth Whirlaway was being faulted as an extremely unreliable challenger for Derby honors and reports were being carried that Porters Cap and Little Beans were suffer ¬ ing with ailments or infirmities that might lead to their withdrawal from Saturdays fixture Porters Cap Charles S Howards co favorite for the Derby with Woodvale Farms Our Boots had a slight kink in his legs when he came onto the track for a gallop this morning and trainer Tom Smith was some ¬ what concerned for the moment but the California star was normal again as soon as he swung into stride Little Beans here to carry the hopes of Mrs Louise Palladino had a similar hitch in his action until he too began to gallop gallopDECLARE DECLARE CANDIDATES SOUND SOUNDBoth Both Smith and Rocky Palladino trainer of Little Beans declared their Derby horses are perfectly sound and at the peak of their condition Having completed their heavy training they will be asked only for short speed tests probably Friday between now and the time they match their speed with their rivals in Americas premier horse race this weekend weekendBlue Blue Pair owned by Mrs Vera S Bragg came ou of his fine victory in the mile Derby Trial Stakes Tuesday none the worse for his experience He won in a manner most satisfactory to his owner and trainer William Crump and only an unforeseen mishap can keep him out of the Derby Blue Pair too was reported to be suffer DISPOSE AND STARETOR WORK1 DERBY DISTANCE AT DOWNS DOWNSAgricole Agricole Declared Out of 75000 Race Gilbert Loses Derby Mount MountContinued Continued from first page pageAs As for Whirlaway the pride and despair of Calumet Farm it was generally agreed that no horse disinclined to make the turns will get much in the Derby Whirlaway bore out badly yesterday just as he wasi taking the lead away from Blue Pair and the ground he lost was more than he was able to make up once he was straightened away for the run through the stretch In the Derby it was pointed out he will have two such turns to negotiate and his stables only hope is that Eddie Arcaro who has been engaged to ride him Saturday will be able to keep him closer to a true course courseBen Ben Jones the Calumet trainer said in effect several days ago that Whirlaway can be looked for either to run a very good race in the Derby or he may not Hes just that kind of a horse horseDispose Dispose here to represent the King Ranch of Robert J Kleberg Jr dominated the training spotlight this morning with his mile and quarter trial in 206 accompanied the last six furlongs by Pajas The son of Discovery working under the direction of trainer Max Hirsch stepped the opening quarter mile in 24 the half mile in 49 the threequarters in 113 mile in 139 and mile and an eighth in 153 Although observers said Dispose at this time does not look as good as he did in Florida when he won the Bahamas and Flamingo Stakes no fault could be found with this mornings effort effortSomewhat Somewhat of a disappointment was the training performance today of Staretor the colorbearer of Hugh S Nesbitt This colt ran out badly in his work despite the efforts of George Woolf who will handle him in tHe Derby Staretor covered the first quarter in 24 the half mile in 48 and threequar ¬ ters inkl15 and then started for the outside Far out in the track while negotiating the fourth quarter mile he was timed in 145 for the mile and then straightened up for the run through the home stretch he completed the mile and a quarter in 212 the final two furlongs in twentyseven seconds Staretor worked the same distance Sunday in 208 and in that drill he eased himself in the middle of the track to give rise to the ob ¬ servation that he too will have to be kept more interested in his task to prove danger ¬ ous Saturday SaturdaySWAINS SWAINS LONG WORKOUT WORKOUTSwains Swains last hard drill was a mile and a furlong in 156 easing up the mile and a quarter in 212 This gray hope of Cleaveland Putnam was timed in 25 for the first quar ¬ ter 50 for the half mile 116 for three quarters and 143 for the mile Swain this morning was without a Derby rider as a result of Johnny Gilberts suspension in Maryland and efforts were being made to secure a substitute Among those considered for the engagement is Johnny Adams now in California CaliforniaAnother Another development today was the with ¬ drawal of Shady Brook Farms Agricole from the race Theodore E Mueller the colts owner left the decision up to his trainer George Brooks and the latter said that Agricole is not the type of horse suited to such an impost as 126 pounds which the Derby conditions require Agricoles with ¬ drawal reduces the probable Derby field to eleven elevenMeanwhile Meanwhile other candidates took things rather easy this morning Louis Tufanos Wood Memorial Stakes winner Market Wise stepped a slow threeeighths in prep ¬ aration for a sixfurlong trial tomorrow while Vaidina Farms Valdina Paul made a gallop and Our Boots remained under his shed J Fred
