LATONIAS SPRING STAKE INDUCEMENTS Under new management the Latonia Jockey Club has announced its list of stake offerings for its spring meeting of 110 They are longestablished favorites with the material difference that there is an appreciable increase In values over 1909 a fea ¬ ture likely to engage the a ttenllStv and approval of turfmen Latonhi racing should be easily the most important and best patronized of any in the west A line and picturesque course with a big imputation right at hand are factors that rightly used would make Latonia a money maker of high degree It has not been such in the past but all that it needs to make it so is enterprise and liberality Only the latter element can attract the highclass horses and it is highclass horses in competition that send peo ¬ ple flocking through the gates of a race track It has been said that the people contiguous to Latouia will not patronize highclass racing In reply it might be truthfully said that no one is competent to pass upon that point until the people have l eon offered an opiwrtunity to show whether they will or not This is not saying tliat good horses have not raced at Latouia That would be ignoring the rec ¬ ords But it is a fact that Latonia racing lias been comjiosed of a paucity of racers of good class and a plethora of ordinary selling platers It is up to the new management to reverse this order of things and thereby thrive exceedingly exceedinglyAs As a shining example of what may be done Wash ¬ ington Park may be cited Its management wisely enchained public attention by founding stake races of such value that owners of crack racers simply had to iwtronize Washington Park and then the people not only of Chicago but of all the west as well felt that Washington Park racing was an an ¬ nual jittraetion that was not to be resisted The practical result wa that in its twentyfive days of annual racing the Washington Park Club made more money than any other western racing organization itild in a hundred days Something of the same line of action would inevitably produce surprising results at Latonia It may come In time timeFor For a starter the program offered this year is a very good one and entitled to the extreme of patron ¬ age at the hands of western ownersl The stakes close for entries at midnight of Thursday March 17 and that is not far away The full list is as follows followsFor For ThreeYearOlds and Over OverThe The Merchants Stakes selling guaranteed val ¬ ue 1500 1 mile mileThe The Brewers Exchange Handicap guaranteed value 1500 a4 mile mileThe The Independence Handicap guaranteed value 2000 1 11G miles milesThe The Cincinnati Hotel Handicap guaranteed value 2000 1 18 miles milesFor For ThreeYearolds ThreeYearoldsThe The Latonia Derby guaranteed value 4000 1 12 miles milesFor For TwoYearOlds TwoYearOldsThe The Clipsetta Stakes for fillies guaranteed value 1500 58 mile mileThe The Harold Stakes for colts guaranteed value 1500 58 mile mileThe The Cincinnati Trophy guaranteed value 2500 and the Cincinnati Trophy Cup 5 12 furlongs furlongsEntry Entry blanks are ready at this otlice fur all who may apply Jamaica Stake Program Announced. colors purple gold braided scarlet sleeves black velvet cap with gold fringe made their api caranco on the turf and in that stretch of years King Edward lias had a varied and interesting career as a racing man He has had his ups and downs but it is remarkable that In is one of two living owners who have won the Derby three times the other being Lord Rosebery Along with being the only reign ing monarch to win a Derby he is a liberal patrol of the crosscountry sport and has once captured a blue ribbon of the chasi the Liverpool Grand Na ¬ tional Other Mg races have fallen to the king but it is singular that o far he has not won the Oaks Though OaksThough the royal colors were registered with the Jockey Club in 1873 they did not actually appear till four years later on Leonidns which was ridden in a military steeplechase at Aldershot by Captiiin Wenty Hope Johnston but to no avail Under Jockey Club rules the royal colors first appeared at the Newmarket July meeting of 1877 The king was then the Prince of Wales and among tin few miiuials he owned was an Arab named Alep thought by many of the royal retainers to be possessed of speed The next horse of any note to do duty for the royal stable was llohen lliiden His liest piece of success was the Naval and Military Steeplechase at Kemptoii Park and a halfbrother of his named Magic won several minor events This was In 1880 and that was the first year the king figured among the winning owners of the English turf his total being 1484 In 1SS7 the prince had a few horses one of them being beingil Loyalist a halfbrother to Paradox winner of the fillyt Two Thousand Guineas of 1885 and a chestnut filly named Counterpane She started second favorite for the Stoekbridge Cup and on the homestretch seemingly had the race at her mercy when all of a sudden she stopped and fell dead Loyalist was spoken of as a splendidlooking horse but he was destined never to figure in a race for he broke dowii J in training For the seasons of 1887 and 1888 there is no mention of the prince in the winning owners list but in 1889 he won two races worth 1020 one being GoodwoodThe a selling race at Goodwood The royal colors did a little better in 1890 for they were seen at the front in four races worth i 3470 and in 1801 tho showing Was still better That year the figures were 20740 but there was a 1 big drop the next year only 7120 being shown In 1 1893 the prince ordered his horses removed from fromKingselere Kingselere to Newmarket where they were placed under the care of Richard Marsh At the end of the season the total winnings were 1GGO Things I were somewhat better ill 1894 when the total 1 reached 17495 and in 1895 41905 made prin clpally by Persimmon as a twoyearold He first appeared in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot which he won la a canter and lie followed up the victory by GoodwoodThe winning the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood The same year Leopold de Rothschild showed a i firstclass twoyearold in St Frusquin which hart I won three of his four races being only beaten in the other when he was asked to give away a lot of weight Naturally the public was anxious to sen the 1 pair meet and the opportunity offered in tins Middle Park Plate which tlieu as now was regarded as the twoyearold Derby trial Prior to the race Persimmon was coughing but when the day of the race came around it was thought he was suf ¬ ficiently recovered and he was sent jo the post and made favorite at 2 to 1 St Frusquin made all the running and won by half a length front the I filly Omladiua with Persimmon five lengths away in third place Early in his threeyearold season Marsh gave the colt a trial and was horrified by his lack of anything like firstclass form An expert veterinary was called in who pronounced the colt to be suffering from an ulcerated tooth A course of treatment made this all right but it was thought better not to start him in the Two Thousand Guineas The race was won by St Frusquin and he did his work iii such fashion that he was selected as favorite for the Derby He had done all that 1 was asked of him in public and it was little wonder that he went to the post with odds to 13 to on 1 him Persimmon being sepond choice at 5 to 1 The finish is still remembered by those who saw it Persimmon getting homo by a neck the victory i being largely credited to AVatts his jockey a strong rider in a close finish About a month later the j pair met In the Prince of Wales Stakes at Newmar ¬ ket St Frusmiin having the slight advantage of three pounds in the weights which made a differ ¬ ence for St Frusquin won by half a length These cracks never met again for St Frusquin broke down in the Eclipse Stakes at Sundown while Persimmon won the St Leger and the Jockey ClubStakes which that year were worth 44950 He was even better as a fouryearold being in a class by himself the Ascot Cup being one of his chief victories In 1890 the year of Persimmons 1 Derby the prince headed the list of winning owners for the tiist time with a total of 134455 Jnitnext year the total took a drop to 77750 77750The The prince had another good year in 1539 with the debut of Diamond Jubilee Diamond Jubilee was given his first public airing in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot finishing fourth He was tried again in the July Stakes at Newmarket but herq he acted like a crazy horse and in one of his capers before the gate bolted into a ditch and when the start was finally effected Watts his jockey could do nothing with him himSoon Soon trainer Marsh conceived the idea of changing jockeys and he tried Mornington Cannon The plan was a good one and in the Prince of Wales Stakes Diamond Jubilee came home second showing thati ho could run when ho wanted With Cannon on jhis back lie won the Boscawen Stakes but had to be driven hard and this not being suitable to his1 dis position Cannon became his enemy then and thJre Marsh made another change of riders the third choice being Herbert Joiies who had the year previously ridden fortythree races racesIt It was thought to lie an unwise move to put such an inexperienced rider up but Diamond Jubile6 seemed to take to Jones and did well when he had him in the saddle Jones had the leg up on the stub ¬ born animal when ho won the Two Thousand Guineas by four lengths and he brought home the Derby though at the time he did not seem to have much heart In the way he ran After doing some splendid work in the stud Diamond Jubilee was sold lo a South American breeder for 150000 150000Last Last year the king won the Derby with Minoru the details of which are well known Though he finished second In the list of winning owners he made a fine showing his total for the season being over 100OCO Racing Dates For 1910.
