SUBURBAN AND BRIGHTON HANDICAP HORSES AND WEIGHTS To admirers of racing it is si whiff of old times to be able to scan compare and discuss weights as ¬ signed the noted horses engaged in the Brooklyn Suburban and Brighton handicaps Last year these great races were so reduced in vslue and drew such slight entry lists as to be almost entirely robbed of im ¬ portance but it is a change for the better this year All have been well endowed and have drawn entry lists that practically comprise all of the demonstrated good handicap horses of the time besides some that may be better than they have as yet shown Quite a fillip of interest is added by the return to Americsm racing of such quondam adventurers abroad as Ballot Priscillian Helmet and Dinna Ken and it may be set down that their reappearance will elicit lively curiosity It would l e somewhat unreasonable to ex ¬ pect Ballot to prove himself in all respects the grand race horse he was two years ago but there will re ¬ main the hope that he is still able to prove himself si formidable rival to such cracks of last year as Fitz Herbert and King James JamesMr Mr Vosburghs assignment of weights gives Fitz Herbert the credit of being the best horse in America It is only a few years back that his sire Ethelburt was awarded the same distinction in the same big liaudicaps and it is resilly an interesting problem as to whether Fitz Herbert or his daddy was the best race horse King James and Ballot are practically rated as equal although Ballot is given one pound more in the Suburban On the basis of the weightforage scale Maskette is really second in the handicaps Fitz Herbert being set to give her two pounds in the Brooklyn Handicap and one pound in the Suburban and Brighton By virtue of great deeds in racing these horses have their capacity reflected in weight allot ¬ ments that have rarely been carried to victory in these great races and good as the3 are it is quite prob ¬ able that the winners are to cpme from those more leniently handicapped Hilarious a good colt seems overweighted but his stablemate Helmet if his return to his native land serves to bring about a return of his form as a twoyearold would have a tremendous chance High Private is an infirm horse but one of great speed and a stsiyer that will be hard to beat if he can be brought to the post fit If entirely sound High Privsite would probably rank close to Fitz Herbert among our fouryearolds but no matter how nature has gifted a horse it Is hard for a cripple to stand the ordeal of such a trying contest as is involved in the running of si handicap of the first order Firestone is a good racer well treated and so is Olsunbala Joe Madden had to be retired from racing in midsummer last year and along with Dorante may lie incapacitated by ailing legs On some of his running the Illinoisowned horse Czar is favorably treated tit 110 pounds He is a stayer and very fsist when right Affliction Fitz Herberts only conqueror Isist year will be have a following if sent to the post Such crack twoyearolds of last year as Waldo Sweep Dalmatian Rocky OBrien Grasmere Faunt leroy and Prince Imperial have been weighted equitably but are more likely to display their prowess in Make races for their own age than m these big handicaps Below are the weights given all the horses in the three races and their pounds on or off according to the scale of C L HARRISON INSPECTS WALDO Louisville Ky February S C L Harrison of New York was Here a day or two ago with F A Forsythe in whose stable hit has the Kentucky Derby favorite Waldo and a select band of twoyearolds In training under the care of trainer Raleigh Cols ¬ ton tonMr Mr Harrison came here en route to New York from the south after spending four days in Lexing ¬ ton where be visited the leading thoroughbred stock farms of that section While there lie made arrange ¬ ments to breed six broodmares he owns now quar ¬ tered at Mr Forsy thes Fountainblne Stud Farm In Mercer County Two of these he will scud to Castle ton Stud to be mated with Disguise and Celt one goes to the Nursery Stud to be mated with August nionts 1 5UOO English Derby winner Rock hand Belmonts 125000 English Derby winner Rock Sand another will be sent to Elmendorf Farm to be mated with Africander and the other two will be mated with the Forsythe stallions Filigrane and Out of Reach ReachMr Mr Harrison tried last fall to buy tie dam of Waldo lor his stud The mare now in France is owned by William Astor Chanler who bought her for a song at the closingout sale of the Seuorita Stud Now he wants 0000 for her and even at those figures Mr Harrison probably would today he her owner were she safe and sound in this country The mare has a yearling filly in this country by Garry Hermann a sister to the twoyearold colt that Captain J T Williams owns and she left this country in foal to Olympian the halfbrother to fenny and sire of King Olympian OlympianMr Mr Harrison was much pleased with the forward condition of his horses in trainer Colstons care and especially coniidinicntcd the trainer cm the grand winter condition of Waldo Said he heIf If nothing out of the ordinary in my business comes up I will be here in May to see my colt fill his Kentucky Derby engagement Barring training accidents Waldo will lace the starters barrier in the Derby and it will be the colts first start in 1JIO as we have concluded the Camdeu Handicap will be run a bit early and necessitate a more hurried preparation than the Kentucky Derby will call for So Waldo will not go to Lexington to race nor have colors up until he joes to the post in the Derby My colt will have a careful preparation for the big stake and if he meets with no mishap will go to the post as fit iis skillful training can make him himMr Mr Harrison says that neither Prince Imperial nor Barleythorpe will be brought west for the Derby nor is it likely that Rocky OBrien will be trained for the big race here Harrison is in racing for sport and is not a betting man He runs Waldo and bis other horses solely for the stakes and purses they can win So far as he is personally concerned the betting angle of the game cuts little figure He is an allaround sportsman next to horses perhaps holding game chickens in greatest esteem but he admires any sport that is clean He says a law legalizing parimutuel betting ou the eastern race tracks would be popular legislation and in his opinion the big metropolitan race courses would gladly welcome the state assuming charge of such betting and getting a rakeoff f But personally I dont give the betting end of racing a thought said Mr Harrison although of course I have friends who like to take a chance on my horses I ani only in the business fqr the recreation and the sport I want to breed a few horses and some day come out with a Waldo of iuy own raising I have some nice youutr mares and will breed them to the best stallions obtainable and ill time I may breed a crack I have had more en ¬ joyment out of Waldo than anything I ever owned and if I can succeed in breeding a colt like him I will consider myself well repaid for all the money I have put into the racing and breeding business businessTrainer Trainer Louis Tauber lias concluded to make no further attempt to train Goldic and has decided to place this son of Goldfinch in the stud this year yearTrainer Trainer William Walker is at sea regarding Jupiter Joes prospects of standing training since he has had a chance to look him over following hisar rival from Levington Tlie son of Handsel has been fired just above the hoof and Walker says that never in his experience did he hear of a horse being fired in such a place 1 am glad a skilled veterinarian did the job he said for if that is tile real location of his laroir ness I have learned something new in the train ¬ ing business I never thought a horse could break down between the tendon and hoof and if Jupiter Joe really did that lie has established a precedent so far as my experience is concerned concernedA A proinising twoyearold at Churchill Downs is the bay colt by Mazagau out of Betsy Broeck by Ten Broeck under the care of trainer Coyne in the stable of the Louisville turfman George J Long This colt is a halfbrother to the stake winners Traverser and Elizabeth Klein The former was much abused as a twoyearold He belonged to Virginia Bradley of Blitzen Boney Boy and Robert Waddell fame who was noted for racing his horses excessively Mr Long did not breed this colt he being foaled at the farm of C B Hawkins In Wood ford County close to the spot where Longi fellow and Ten Broeck were bred Trainer Coyne bought him at the Lexington fall sale for 700 He is the only outsidebred yearling the owner of Sir Iluon invested in during the season of 1909 Mr Long paid 325 more than Mr Rradley gave for his famous halfbrother Traverser being a 125 yearling Nineteen wins was the record Traverser made in the Bradley colors and he dropped dead iu a race that nil to the time of his fatality looked like a gift for him He was one of the best horses the Englishbred stallion Rossington sent to the races racesTrainer Trainer Raleigh Colston who has charge of the big string of horses owned by F A Forsythe and C L Harrison the owner of Waldo at Churchill Downs looks for Berry Maid the fiveyearold daugh ¬ ter of Oddfellow and Rebus by Bramble to be a useful mare this year Colston says that in Cali ¬ fornia last spring when the mare was on edge and had the race she was running In at her mercy she got in a jam owing to rough riding tactics and was all but ruined for future racing purposes as her hack seemed badly strained I thought so much of her he said that I would not let her go back to the farm and I was rewarded by her rounding to Torn In the summer at Saratoga but just as soon as I got her going well she struck her leg and 1 concluded to let up on her for the season No horse now under my care has wintered better than Berry Maid and I look for her to return to her good three yearold and early fouryearold form formII II T Oxnard has located the stallion Prince of Melbourne winner of the Lawrence Realization Stakes and Brighton Cup at the BRIGHT OUTLOOK FOR HUNT CLUBS New York February S The Hunts Committee of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association lias granted dates for a twodays meeting to be con ¬ ducted by the Watchuug Hunt of Ilainfield X T The days chosen are Saturday May 28 and Decora ¬ tion Day Monday May 30 The club has also sig iiinod an intention of making application for a meeting in the fall fallSecretary Secretary Bryan announces that already dates have been allotted for ten days of amateur racing during the season of 1U10 and he thinks that there will be it least fifty days taken up for such sport during the year The dates thus far granted in addition to those of the Watchuug Hunt are two days at Brook line and three days in the spring and three in the fall for the United Hunts of Maryland Last year there were thirtynine days of amateur sport but the early application for racing time this year and the number of hunts applying for recognition makes certain that an estimate of fifty for 1JIO is modest Another feature of the amateur sport that is being advocated at this time is the arrangement of inter ¬ state trophies Every state that boasts of a hunt club or of hunt clubs is always eager to try con ¬ clusions with the hunters from neighlwring states and such trophies would surely furnish interesting racing racingThe The following hunts have received recognition from the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association for J010 J010Albcmarle Albcmarle County Hunt A S Craven master Green wold Va VaBerkshire Berkshire Hunt Frederick Bull master Lenox Mass MassBlackburn Blackburn Hunt Henry L Collins master Se wlkley Ia IaChatham Chatham Hunt John K Culver master Savannah ta taChester Chester Valley Hunt W C AVilson master Stratford Chester County Pa PaChevy Chevy Chase Hunt Clarence Moore master Chevy Chase Mil Essex Hunt Charles Pfizer master Gladstone N J JGreen Green Spring Valley Hunt Kedmond C Stewart waster Garrison P O Md MdKillashandra Killashandra Hunt It P McGrann master Lau Lauster ster Ia Ixnidoii Hunt Harry W Smith master Lecsburg LecsburgMiddlcburg t Middlcburg Hunt Clulr S II Fred and John U Townsend masters Middlcliurg Va VaThe The Lynchburg Hounds J M B Lewis master Lynehburg Va VaThe The Middlesex Fox Hounds A Henry Uigginson master South Lincoln Mass MassMeadow Meadow Brook Club Malcolm Stevenson master Westbury Long Island IslandMr Mr Hitchcocks Hounds Thomas Hitchcock Jr master Aiken S C COrange Orange County Hunt Robert L Gerry and John S Ames masters The Plains Fanpiier County Va VaPatapsco Patapsco limit Dorsey M Williams master ISlk Kidge Howard County Md MdRadnor Radnor Hounds Horace B Hare master Bryn Mawr Pa PaShclburiie Shclburiie Hounds J Watson Webb master Shel hurne Vt VtWatchnng Watchnng Hunt Club of Plainfield X J Lewis E Waring master Plalnticld X J JWeslchestcr Weslchestcr County Hunt Edward II Carle mas ¬ ter Sbelbiirne Vt VtWest West Chester Hunt John J Ghecn master West Chester Pa PaWhite White Marsh Valley Hunt Welsh Strawbridge master masterRuse Ruse Tree Fox Hunting Club Ivan Fox master masterChagrin Chagrin Valley Hunt of Cleveland O W T White master masterXorfolk Xorfolk Hunt Club Medtield Mass Henry S Vaughn master masterTomahawk Tomahawk Hunt Orange Va Wallace Sanford master masterBrandywino Brandywino Hounds Winchester Mass Charles B Mather master masterApril April has been set aside for the Rockaway Hunt iiinl April HJ for the Trial Steeplechases at the old Linden track at Elizabeth X J Phillips IS Thomp ¬ son is chairman of the race committee of the Rock HWay Hunt which is at Cedarhurst and Louis J ISatjer is the ruling spirit of the Trial Steeplechases where the prizes raced for are cups New Stallions In Futurity Of 1912. KENTUCKY RACING COMMISSION AFFAIRS AFFAIRSLouisville Louisville Ky February 8 The present Ken ¬ tucky Racing Commission will go out of office during the coming month and their successors will soon be appointed by Governor Willson The Racing Commission came into existence by an act of the legislature of Kentucky on March 23 190 and very soon thereafter the present commission was apiK nted by Governor Beckham to serve four years according to the construction of the law as regu ¬ lated by this act The present body is composed of J P Chinn chairman of Mercer County E F Clay vicechairman of Bourbon County Milton Young and Louis DCS Coguets of Fayetto County and Charles F Grainger of Jefferson County A B Ronse the secretary is from Kenton County The secretary is elected by the board but the governor really has also appointing power in his case at be indorsed by the commission commissionRight Right now much gossip is going the rounds of turf circles as to probable changes in the commis ¬ sion says the CourierJournal Last night it was said that Charles F Grainger of this city and Louis Des Coguets are anxious to get away from the duties of commissioners and Colonel E F Clay of Bourbon County will decline to serve in the of ¬ fice after March owing to ill health It is rumored that Louisville will have two representatives to fill the places of Messrs Grainger and Des Cognets while J X Camden of Woodford County president of the Kentucky Association will be offered Colony Clays place Milton Young and J P Chinn will be retained if they will accept reappointment is the tip going the rounds and W F Schulte has been recommended to Governor Wilisou as one of Louisvilles representatives on the new commission George J Long would be most acceptable to turf ¬ men and add strength to the body controlling Ken ¬ tucky racing but he is a man of vast business inter ¬ ests and it is not likely he would regard himself in si K sition to accept such an appointment except in a case where turf interests stood in greater jeopardy than they dp in Kentucky today The new commis ¬ sion that will go into office in April unless a mem ¬ ber dies or resigns will hold over as a body until April 1914 a period of four years The report is current that if he accepts the appointment J X Camdeii will be chairman of the new commission and J P Cuiiiti vicechairman The latter at pres ¬ ent holds the position of chairman and has tilled the office since the inception of the commission in March 190i It is probable that the secretary will be called upon to act in a similar capacity with no additional salary for the Kentucky Breeding Bu ¬ reau tiie activities of which are to be revived in the near future Virginians To Train At Benning. Private the fouryearold son of Oddfellow and Coinmena that he took out oC a selling race last season High Private is the prop ¬ erty of C C Smithson whose stable is handled by Coles That he has been well engaged in the big handicaps is evidence that Coles expects him to train successfully although the colt was unsound when he bought him Another good one that Coles is handling for Mr Smithson is the jumping mare Vilhulla She is reported to be doing exceedingly well Bobbie Kean lugglcr Xeoskaleeta Bound Brook and Clements and others in the string stringA A number of the William Garth horses HofHyacinth Molesey Fauntleroy's Sire Humble Worker. FAUNTLEROYS SIRE HUMBLE WORKER Louisville Ky February S It has become known among the trainers at Churchill Downs that the sire of Fauntleroy one of the best of the 1009 twoyear olds will never get another colt Fauntleroy is by Little Saint which after winning in England was brought to this country and won at Sheepshcad Bay In the colors of Richard Croker From the latter he was secured bv David Gideon and sent to Kentucky where Flickamaroo the dam of Fauutleroy was mated with him himIn In the fall of 1905 Gideon had a sale of his breed ¬ ing stock and though then only ten years old 223 was the highest bid made for the English horse William Gerst the Xashville turfman purchasing him at Unit price For some reason the latter was not exactly pleased with his bargain and taking a dislike to the horse had him gelded and turned over to his brewery company for ordinary use As u result the sire of one of the cracks of the turf is today hauling a wagon through the streets of Xash ¬ ville worth about as much as an ordinary mule whereas if he was in the condition in which M Gerst bought him in H lie would now he as good n investment at 22 as was ever put in a horse ai d easily worth thousands of dollars Little Sii t was well bred being a son of the great Friars Bi sam tnd out of Little Emily bv Wisdom and on the dam side was bred like Charuxus "In The Matter Of Betting." IN THE MATTER OF BETTING Under the above heading a writer iu The English ¬ man a weekly published in the interests of labor and trade and the protection of land has an eminently sensible article on the question of betting bettingBetting Betting he says is simply u practical and businesslike manifestation of the gambling spirit The gambling spirit is the recognition of the law of chance It is more than that it is the invocation of the law of chance The obvious abuses need no enlargement at my hands The law of chance is an uncertainty and applied in exaggerated doses fatal I may say the same of all the many bottles of medicine that I have had to take without the slightest chance of getting a farthing of the money back backBirth Birth has a great deal to do with gambling One crowd gambles because it has been born into the means of doing so another because it sees iu the accident of meaner birth just so much chance How ¬ ever it may be the gambling spirit and its expres ¬ sion in betting has always existed and in the na ¬ ture of things always will exist existClearly Clearly there is more in this matter of betting than appears at tirst sight I for my part would like to set the little business cleared up anil bereft of some of the externals that opponents of wagering in any shape wrap round the subject and are most ¬ ly cant or at all events look like it Far be it from me to impugn any objectors honesty of purpose but a good many people indulge in cant tiuite innocently they were brought tip to it They dont know that they are canting humbugs in appearance if not in reality and nowadays of course appearance is everything How many people are there who before voicing an opinion ask themselves whether they are not speaking by way of prejudice or saying some ¬ thing that might very easily be construed into mere cant of the bestV I hold no brief for betting quite the reverse it owes me money But I do think that a subject of the kind should bo approached with a calm judicial mind and discussed not as a canker which it is not but as a pursuit that is liable to abuse abuseCuriously Curiously enough the legislature has made an enactment which tends most of all to render betting dangerous There must be no passing of money when the bet is made or words to that effect The biggest mistake in the world 1 should propose that there be no betting of any kind without the absolute deposit of the entire snm staked When it comes to paying out the actual meaning of betting Is clearly understood by all parties and I do not think that anyone will deny to twentieth century men the right to do that which they clearly realize and understand It is a huge subject and will not spoil for a little more light to be cast upon It London Sporting Life Comment On Miller Bill Hearings. COMMENT ON MILLER BILL HEARINGS The hearings on the Miller bill at Ottawa have served this purpose so far that they have shown the value of the evidence of persons with practical knowledge as against airy theorists who are pre ¬ pared to sweep away one of our most important in ¬ dustries and greatest recreations to no other purpose than to exploit their views on what they assume to be a moral question comments the Canadian Sportsman Xo country in the world with the ex ¬ ception of Japan has ever prohibited betting on race courses It is asking rather much of western civil ¬ ization to model Its legislation on that of Japan but even taking the case of the Flowery Kingdom as an example it works against the gentlemen who are so solicitous for our welfare that they would send us to jail to keep us out of harm Japan tried the legal prohibition of racecourse betting for a period long enough to convince the elder statesmen that the new condition was worse than the old Promptly as they recognized this they took action to alter it It was decided that the government would promote betting instead of forbidding it and the parimutuel was adopted as the form A com ¬ mission was sent to several European countries to become familiar with its workings and the last stronghold of Rev Dr Shearer and those who are associated with him was abandoned The United States never took any action as the matter in that country is one of state nor federal jurisdiction For the personal political advantage of various poli ¬ ticians in several states the great industry of breed ¬ ing and racing and the great principle of individual liberty have been temporarily submerged submergedIn In all of these states the attempt to stop betting has quite failed There is any amount of betting in Xew York state but it Is furtive and secret The practice goes on while purses have been lowered and running and trotting meetings abandoned in many cases Perhaps the gentleman who drew up the Miller bill is a smarter lawyer than Governor Hughes of Xew York but that Is hardly likely Yet Mr Hughes made a dismal failure of what he set out to do and over there all the sheriffs and district attorneys who are charged with the enforcement of the law are under his control and authority In Canada the enforcement of the criminal law rests with the local authorities and in case of the passage of the present bill w should have it a dead letter in many parts of the country while enforced with all the unmerciful zeal of Inilfbakcd enthusiasts elsewhere Ballot Is Wintering Well. BALLOT IS WINTERING WELL Xew York Februa o lumva HUH iiiuiiiio Healey have returned from Hot Springs Ark The former found James R Keenes horses in tine condi ¬ tion Ballot had taken on a lot of llesh and looked much better than he did when Rowe went on his vacation Helmet and Melisande are improving steadily and Maskette is as chipper as a twoyear old The Kecne twoyearolds are growing famously Mr Rowe was asked what he thought of the treat ¬ ment Ballot received in the big handicaps He said that he had no criticism to offer When a man has a good horse he declared he cannot expect to get him into big handicaps with a feather on his back Ballot has shown that he is a good horse and Mr Vosburgh has properly handicapped him on his best form If I am lucky enough to get him to the post In firstclass condition next spring he will give a good account of himself and all I can say is that he is wintering satisfactorily A man could not expect a horse to do better betterTrainer Trainer Healey also found the ho pelier Stable in nice shape Olambala is tilling out nicelv and Mexoana is growing into a line chunk of a filly Healey is confident that Olambala will make a firstrate routetraveling fouryearold and hedoes not think that handicapper Vosbursh treated him unfairly lit the Brooklyn and Suburban The Hamburg Place twoyearolds Mr Wilson purchased last season from John Madden are all in tiptop con ¬ dition and Mr Uealey expects to have the most pre ¬ cocious of them ready early Mr Healey is an early trainer He had Mexoana and Zacateeas and Resprinsful his three smartest twoyearolds of last season ready to run their best races at Pimlico in April AprilBoth Both Healey and Rowe will l busy with their horses from now on But they will not take any ¬ thing from
