LEADING MONEYWINNING HORSES OF VARIOUS AGES DURING 1909 1909That That the lions share of the prizes hung up liy the racing associations of the United States Canada and Mexico during 1C09 went to the threeyearolds is indicated by an interesting compilation of the winnings of the leading horses of various ages herewith presented The tabulation shows that the leading thirty twoyearolds won ISC races and 234215 in stakes and purses that the threeyear olds took 275 races and 302077 while the fouryearolds are credited with 240 races and winnings of 218183 and the thirty leaders five years old and over took 284 races and 150413 in stakes and purses The comparatively small amount of money won by the lastnamed class of horses illustrates forcibly the limitations wliicli advancing age puts upon the racer Such a great horse as Jack Atkin is universally conceded to be heads the list of money winners In the most advanced division and yet he succeeded in winning only 10820 during the year as against 40015 as a fouryearold the pre ¬ vious year yearThe The tabulation of the thirty chief winners of the several ages is as follows TWOYEAROLDS TWOYEAROLDSOwner Horse HorseSweep Owner Sts Is 3d Unp Sweep J H Keene S 5 5J 1 O Rocky OBrien J McManus 10 n Waldo C L Harrison 13 S Ocean Bound Wood ford Clay J Sreenvale II P Whitney j 12 4 Flying Squirrel 11 L Thomas IS 10 Radium Star 11 T Wilson Jr 13 2 Schoolmann J A Bennet 7 2 2J Fauntleroy J McLaugblin 31 S Donau W Gerst 41 15 Pretend T Monahan 30 S Mexoana Oneck Stable 12 fl Prince Imperial II F Little 2G 1C 1CJ Point J W Schorr 2G 11 11S Dalmatian S C IHIdreth 14 5 5J Cherryola J T Ireland 22 8 The Fad C C Van Meter 17 7 7J Grasmere J K K on 11 3 Busy D L McGibbon 19 C Eye White W II Fizer 15 e Candleberry II T Wilfon Jr 7 C Medallion E B Cassatt 37 i iS Livonia S C Hildrcth 13 C Turret B L Marks 12 3 3S Galvesca S P Tate 28 fl Turf Star James Butler IS J JA Starbottle A Belmont 11 4 Polls 11 L Thomas 10 4 Carroll II L Thomas 5 3 3Chelsea Little King Chelsea Stable 1C C 517 ISC ISCTHREEYEAROLDS THREEYEAROLDS THREEYEAROLDSOwner Horse Owner Sts Is IsS Joo Madden S C UUdrcth 15 T Hilarious 3 H Keeiif 5 4 Fitz Herbert S C Hildreth 15 11 Maskette J It Keenc C T High Private C C Smlthson 23 K Olambala R T Wilson Jr 15 7 7A Rose Queen QueenArondack A Kocnigsborg 42 11 11J Arondack J MeLaughlin 41 Wise Mason Newcastle Stable 13 C Crystal Maid R K Lewis 22 Ii IiP The Peer P Dunne 58 li liS Fayette S C Hildroth 11 C CII Harrigan II R Brandt 2i 11 Affliction J R Keene 14 1 1George Bonnie Kelso George Odrm 33 1 Hill Top 11 Augarola 25 f nuy Fisher P T Chiim G J Effendi W T Ryan 10 Woolwinder St James Stable 40 1i 1iP WoolwinderLady Lady Irma P T Ciiiim 32 i iII Jeanette M MAll II G Bedwell 31 If All lied L Johnson 34 7 IJighteasy 11 G Bedwell 30 1J Fashion Plate Oueck Stable 14 Mary Davis II II Davis 20 4 WIntergreen J B Respess S Prince Gal GalMadman George Oilom 3 K Madman H G Bedwell 45 11 Piute P T Chinn IS 7 Tom Ilayward L Johnson 43 11 787 271 271FOURYEAROLDS FOURYEAROLDS FOURYEAROLDSOwner Horse HorseKing Owner Sts li King James S C Hildreth 12 K Firestone S C Uildreth 20 1 Nimbus George Mom 34 1 Booger Kcd J II Brannon 37 11 Stanley Fay FayMaltbie W Walker 28 Maltbie George ReIC 20 Araseo C J Qulnn 33 1 Centre Shot C II ONeill 37 1 1G Haiibridge G H Holle 30 Sir John Johnson JohnsonTerali Beverwyek Stable 1 Terali E A Brenuan 20 Besom P S P Randolph 10 Woodcraft S C HiHrcth 21 J Smiley Corbett Corbettl William Ca li ill 23 l oggs Keene Bros 33 1 Alfred Noble J E GafTncy 0 Shimonese Valley Farm Stable 7 I ISeaucoup R T Wilson Jr in Keep Moving MovingSuperstition H G Bedwell 38 K KA Superstition A L Price 20 Bellwether II G Bedwell 38 Iluck T C McDowell 18 J JW Orcagna W Walker 38 Norbitt W S House 31 I IRlF Motjuctte RlF Carman 20 Rcstigouche S C Hildieth 12 Jeanne dArc S C Hildreth 24 Half Sovereign A Belmont 13 Dorante F A Forsythe 11 i Barney Oldfield Garrity Dunlap 33 i Totals 30 729 24 FIVEYEAROLDS AND OVER OVEROwner Horse Owner Sts l lB Jack Atkin B Schreiber 2 li liH Nadzn H G Bedwell 31 Kings Daughter DaughterSir T C McDowell 17 f fMr Sir Wooster Mr Chetland 15 Clamor Keene Bros 10 1 Prince Ahmed H G Bedwell 20 1 Green Seal St James Stable 40 Waterway Prospect Stable 1 Bcllcvlew B Morris 42 It Merrick T C Milam 27 1 Ethon R I Williams 2S 11 11C Oberon C W Powell 05 i iT Rio Grande T Wright 2U Animus B Schreiber 10 Byzantine N Ray 15 Creel P M Civill IS 11 Charlie Eastman J W Schorr 29 1 Hyperion II T KT Hatfield 30 K Thistledale T W Colt 17 1 Juggler C C Sinithson 30 f Montgomery S C HtHreth 28 Red Illver P T Chiim 13 i Ben Double F J Pons 45 i County Clerk O B Morris 33 11 11H Dreamer H B Duryca 25 lied Leaf Keene Bros j5 n nJohn Lady Esther John Marklein 0 K Gypsy King J 1T R Wainwright 20 1 Royal Onyx T G Moliiielli 32 32S Grandpa S Veitch 21 Good Racer Breaks Down: Servile Goes Wrong During Running Of Race At Terrazas Park.; LATONIA TO FEEL ITS WAY The Kentucky Association has settled on dates for the coming racing season choosing from April 30 to May 7 seven days all told including two Saturdays If this is ratified by the Racing Com ¬ mission Louisville drops in for a twentyfourdays race meeting closing on May 28 That makes it easy for Latonia to begin on the best day of the year Memorial Day How far Latonia will go with Its meeting is not known says the Cincinnati En quircr It has been said that the racing dates ap ¬ plied for will not be so many as in past year as thu management is somewhat dubious of what may hap ¬ pen with the parlmutuels in operation Not one of the men interested in Latonia cares to have thu fiasco of 1008 repeated So this time they will practically feel their way If the meeting runs along two weeks without a big loss another two weeks will be asked for It is just possible that Louisville will content itself with eighteen days and this will let Latonia in a week earlier If this be the case there certainly will be a limited racing sea ¬ son in Kentucky compared with a few years ago when it began about thu first of April and went along without a break until the middle of November It has been stated that Lexington will not havu any purses less than 300 and that will mean tliat the other cities will have to accept that figure as the minimum sum allowed by the commission Louisville will hold a successful meeting Derby Day which falls this year on May 9 gets a lot oC publicity and as there is a great deal of sentiment left in the sport down there the attendance is sure to lie big The animal meeting of the Latonia Jockey Club is ilue in March and after the directors have had their say one will know what is going to be done Just now not so much is promised Nominations for the Brighton Mile. came to Louisville yesterday for his first winter visit from his home at Crab Orchard and was swapping stories around tliii hotels last night says the Courier Journal It has been twentytwo years now since the veteran turfman came to Louisville with the great race horse Terra Cotta He brought him hero to nut in the rich Turf Handicap to which was added that year a Derby stake of 5000 The fa ¬ mous Hankins confederation was then in existence the trainers of which were Eugene Leigh and Tom Kiley with the lightweight jockey George Coving ton doing the riding In Tennessee they had pur ¬ chased for 10000 the noted horse Egmont witli a view of winning this particular race and in future books on the event had bet a fortune on the son of Enquirer That was the year Hankins and his part ¬ ners won the Kentucky Derby with Macbeth II and were racing such famous horses as Huntress and Little Minch One morning Terra Cotta worked a sensational trial and the horses great showing alarmed trainers Leigh and Kiley who realized that their 1000 K Egmont was surely up against the real thing and if they landed their big wagers on the son of Enquirer they must get Terra Cotta out of the way Leigh always resourceful at once hunted up ColoneV Guest and before the sun went down that night Terra Cotta was In the Hankins barn though it took 15000 to get him there Egmont went on and won the Turf Handicap and the Chicago con ¬ federation won a fortune Leigh essayed one of the biggest coups in his racing career when he took Terra Cotta east to run a little later that season in the Suburban Handicap The horse was Iieaten a nose by Elkwood in one of the most sensational finishes in the history of that great race and to this day many turfmen who saw the finish closely hold the judges made an error in the placing of the hprses and Terra Cotta really won It made a difference of 100000 in the bankroll of the Hankins confederation and was the first big setback that tlio Chicago aggregation experienced in their successful career Terra Cotta had bad luck in many of his races but he was undoubtedly a highclass horse Guest has since that day been interested in a number of good horses one of which Heron was a lot above the average Still he owned but one Terra Cotta It is only once in a mans lifetime that a sensational horse like that crosses his path The veteran turf ¬ man says there are still a few thoroughbred mares in Ills country but their owners are breeding mules from theni and it is likely that Crab Orchard will never send to the races another Terra Cotta CottaW W F Kedmon who FORT HUNTER AN IDEAL STALLION Montreal Quc February 1 Fort Hunter donated by A E Dymeiit to the National Bureau of Breed ¬ ing has arrived in Montreal He is the stoutest pureblooded horse iu Canada of home or foreign breed The average wellrounded thoroughbred weighs 12 K pounds This fellow weighs 137C pounds and he is as symmetrical as a Greek bronze He does not carry any abnormal height with his great weight lie is just a little over sixteen hands and in bone neck shoulders girth and disppsitiou he is just about perfect He is the bestlooking thoroughbred ever foaled at the famous Hurricana Stud of General Stephen Sauford and this is said with a knowledge of the merits of Chuctauunda Hocktou Caiighuawaga and other horses produced there thereHe He Is 4iy Potomac out of Rock Rose Potomac was a winner of lir 8S5 Fort Hunter as a threeyear old won over 25000 His sire was a race horse he was himself the greatest race horse ever owned by a Canadian and he is the sire of good race horses He has been the idol of the Dyment stud and it was only to prevent his get coming back to him that a change of stallions was deemed desirable His place has been taken by Red Fox the only son of Flying Fox in America In addition to his prowess on the track he has never been beaten in the show ring and has been awarded the blue ribbon not only among thoroughbreds but against all breeds breedsSamuel Samuel Nesbitt who has the bureau champion Itosemouut brought Fort Hunter to Montreal When I walked away from the Dyment stable with the horse said he all the stable boys were cry lug They worshipped this horse and I do not blame them themFort Fort Hunter is a thoroughbred which makes friends readily He is as kind as a kitten and full of sound sense Like all the other bureau stallions he will be placed on a Canadian farm so that any man with a good coldblooded mare may benefit by him himAs As has iKen pointed out befpre the National Bu ¬ reau insists first of all on soundness and conforma ¬ tion but considers Itself fortunate when besides these qualities it gets a horse that has shown his ability to carry weight over a considerable distance of ground The European bureaus are even more particular about this and will not pay a big price for a horse unless he has a racing record no matter how good he looks Ormonde St Blaise Ard Pat ¬ rick and Galtee More did not sell for half a million dollars on account of their looks They had demon ¬ strated on the race course that they were superior animals So the National Bureau points with pride to the fact that while a superb individual Fort Hunter has a long line of victories to his credit in ¬ cluding the Canadian Derby Buffalo Derby Inter ¬ national Handicap Huron Stakes Toronto Cup Woodstock IMate and Liverpool Cup CupHe He is the best horse we ever owned says Mr Dyment and I wish the bureau luck with him I would not think of selling him because I would not know to what use he might be put after he had outgrown his usefulness I prefer to donate him iu his prime to the bureau knowing that he will be used only for breeding purposes and be well taken care of It is also a pleasure to know that one Is doing something to pull Canada out of a hole in the horsebreeding business and at the same time to give the mother country the cavalry horses she so sorely weds Notes Of The Turf.
