BRUSH TAKES 1909 STALLION HONORS IN CLOSE CONTEST WITH WOOLSTHORPE In a remarkably close competition and by the small margin of 333 the Americanbred Ben Brush fin ¬ ished at the head of the list of American sires of 1909 Next to him came the imported English stallion Woolsthorpe less than 3000 in advance of the American Plaudit Two English horses Star Shoot and Sain were fourth and fifth respectively Ben Brush owes his supremacy to the large winnings of his good son Sweej in the rich stakes tor twoyearolds of 1909 and his total is the smallest to the credit of any leader since 1SS5 Virgil the leading sire of that year having 73235 to his credit In part the compara ¬ tively smallaggregate amassed by the progeny of Ben Brush is ascribahle to the general reduction of rac ¬ ing values of the last two years but the closeness of the contest for supremacy between the first six com ¬ petitors is another factor that played its part Of the twenty leaders of 1109 ten were native bred and ten Lnglish bred In 1908 the division was not so even eleven foreignbreds and nine natives constituting the twenty figuring in the honor list listThe The sums to the credit of the twenty leaders of 1909 and the itemized accounts of their contributing nroseny are as follows Amt Sire SireBen Won Ben Brush 75473 Woolsthorpe 75140 Plaudit 72293 Star Shoot 71435 Sain 08817 Yankee 63910 SCHEDULE TROUBLES IN THE EAST New York January IS There is much discussion among turfmen over the problem of arranging racing dates for the coining season It is understood that the Jockey Clubs stewards will move slowly in this matter and will not make an otlicial announcement for several weeks P J Dwyers statement that Aqueduct and Jamaica will not hold spring meet ¬ ings if Pimlico decides to begin operations on April 23 lias not been received with favor by owners and trainers who are anxious to race here as early as April 15 says the Sun They are not alone in the opinion that the metropolitan tracks should pay no heed to Pimlico but should go ahead with the schedule which prevailed during the season of 1908 It is pointed out that the falling off in attendance figures at Aqueduct and Jamaica last fall was not due so much to the counter attraction at Pimlico as to the attitude of the police and the Queens County authorities who suddenly made things un ¬ pleasant for the oral speculators at those race courses The spectacular raid by the police at Jamaica knocked out what little interest remained in racing at that time it is asserted and served to drive away from the tracks many patrons who would otherwise have remained remainedIt It is further argued that if Aqueduct and Ja ¬ maica should decline to race against Pimlico in the spring they would be compelled to face opposition by the Maryland track in the fall unless they de ¬ cided to keep their tracks closed altogether Pim licos attitude by the way is not pleasing to own ¬ ers and trainers in addition to the Jockey Club stewards it Is said In view of the plucky fight made by the New York tracks to keep their gates open under the most trying circumstances It is be ¬ lieved that Pimlico should be willing tp help not retard the good work For that reason there are many racing men who say that Pimlico for the best interests of racing should be willing to begin the spring meeting on April 1 and race up to April 15 or a few days later Such a plan it is shown would make matters comparatively easy for the local tracks which are willing to run the risk of losing money to keep the turf alive Racing In The Argentine Republic. RACING IN THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC After a visit of four months in the Argentine Re ¬ public Clarence Hailey a leading Newmarket photographer who Is back in England pays high tribute to everything he saw in the South American countries especially that concerning racing and breeding breedingAccording According to Sir Hailey a foreign book or betting at one track on racing going on at another is the custom of Argentina The betting is done through the parimutuels At Rosario a track three hundred miles from Buenos Ayres every facil ¬ ity is provided for its visitors to wager upon the races then going on at Buenos Ayres The pari inutuel oflices are In direct telephone communication communicationThe The horses and jockeys are displayed at both places simultaneously and the betting begins and ends at practically the same moment The amount taken In the iniciiiirs at Rosario Is telephoned to the Palermo track at Buenos Ayres and is added to the money invested at the latter place This makes the dividend the same at both places A man can therefore bet at Rosario ou the racing at Pal ¬ ermo just as well as if he were on the course at Buenos Ayres Ten per cent is deducted but the Rosario managements pays to the Buenos Ayres man ¬ agement live per cent But for the revenue thus de ¬ rived racing at Rosario could not exist existAt At Palermo the conveniences for the public and the Jockey Club members could not be excelled Ad ¬ mission to the cheap enclosure costs 85 cents The rough element is absent and everything is pleasant for visitors In the principal public enclosure the charge for men is 325 and for women 125 There are elevators to carry the crowds to the top of the stand There are one hundred and fifty uniformed messengers in attendance for the purpose of placing wagers in the nmtucls There is no noise no con ¬ fusion partyIn everything is like a garden party In the parinmtuels the amount handled on the big days is 50000 of which ten per cent or 35000 is retained by the management The race course is one mile and threequarters in circumference There is a straight sixfurlongs course The horses race on dirt but there Is some talk of laying down turf turfThe The method of starting is the walk up and Mr Hailey says it is nearly perfect After every race the horses are taken into a corner of the paddock and have a hose turned on them They seem to like it After this they are well rubbed down In the training gallops no saddles are used usedEnglander Englander a North American jockey with no particular reputation in the United States or Canada is now the best rider at Buenos Ayres He was re ¬ markably successful in making roguish cunning animals do their best in races He is now under contract to Mr Unzue one of Buenos Ayres chief racing men who owns the most extensive breeding farm in Argentina It Is known as San Jacinto and covers an area of ground twentyOne miles long by eighteen miles wide Mr Unzue has five other camps at one of which there are 50000 ostriches These are let to dealers at the rate of 150 a bird per annum for the feathers feathersMany Many of the paddocks of the stud farm are three miles long and it sometimes takes half a day to find a particular mare and foal All the stud grooms are either English or Irish They receive three per cent commission on the yearlings sold annually The foals have grand bone and substance Opposition For Faddists In England. OPPOSITION FOR FADDISTS IN ENGLAND The political situation in England has taken on a sporting turn for the Amalgamated Sports Com ¬ mittee and the National Sporting League are can ¬ vassing the candidates for Parliament as to their views on racing and betting These organizations have been formed for the special purpose of fighting the faddists who aim to abolish racing and if they discover anyone with antiracing tendencies they will work against him The sporting bodies are going about their work in a systematic way and have issued two questions as follows 1 Would you oppose any interference with the present freedom of the press in respect to racing matters 2 Are you opposed to further restrictions of the liberties of the people and would you vote against any legislation thut had for its object the prohibition of betting by telegraph telephone or letter To make the matter clear may we quote an imaginary case A business man at Liverpool takes an interest in the Derby and desires to speculate a sovereign of Ids own honestlyacquired mouey on his judgment of the horses running He does not wish to leave his business and travel to Epsom but desires to tele ¬ graph his bet to his turf commission agent Would you vote against any legislation that had for its object the prohibition of such a transaction transactionIt It makes no difference whether the candidate is Unionist Liberal Labor or Socialist he is asked to answer the questions The project is getting all sorts of backing from the press and as one big newspaper put it We cannot urge upon sportsmen too strongly the necessity of using their every en ¬ deavor to work unceasingly to vote against these faddists who would squeeze out of our national life all enjoyment to which they themselves are not in ¬ clined Today we want statesmen not politicians merely We want broadiuindcd men not narrow minded bigots bigotsAlthough Although the movement has only just been started a number of replies have already been received and published One of the earliest and most prominent was from Sir Charles Cayzer who said he was not only in favor of everything asked but stood pre ¬ pared to support legislation making it possible to recover sporting debts by law He is a Unionist of Monmountli borough The first answer came from Mr II Belloe a Liberal of South Salford who said My atitude upon all matters concerning betting racing buying and selling speculative stocks and shares gambling with cards for mouey or with dice Is very simple and I have often expressed it I do not think it is the business of the state to interfere with it in any degree and I can see no reason why hazards of this sort should not be indulged In bv those who take their amusement in this way if they so feel inclined Further I am particularly of the opinion that the law should be eijjial which at present it is not for all classes of society iu this respect anil for all forms of hazards William Duke's Success In France. WILLIAM DUKES SUCCESS IN FRANCE New York January IS The splendid record of 3300000 marks won by George Walker for his em ¬ ployers during the six years that he trained horses in Germany and Austria is surpassed by that of an ¬ other American trainer who is engaged abroad During the past six years William Duke trainer of tlie stable of W K Yanderbllt in France is credited with this showing on winnings Year Won 104 2St249 francs 1905 428278 1M 0 1229900 1907 32S65 1MS 1314077 1 09 1153194 Total 4740333 francs francsThis This is equal to 3792204 marks The VanderbUt stable has won the French Derby three times in tlw last four years in 1900 with Maiutenon in 190S with Sea Sick aud in 1909 with Negofol The Derby is a stake of 200000 francs added money Another achievement of Dukes was the winning of the 77 600 Grand Prix witli Northeast in VMS It is a singular fact that in four races mentioned above the regular stable jockey was not in the saddle In 1900 Ranch a California boy then attached as first jockey was unable to ride on account of a bad fall some days before the race and the only available rider to I e had was Woodland a steeplechase jockey In 1908 Bellhouse the stable jockev was laid up and Milton Henry rode Sea Sick Bellliouse was again iu the hospital when Northeast won the Grand Prix so Joe Cliilds had the honor of winning the big race Last year Bellhouse still being first jockey had the choice of mounts the stable ran two and chose Oversight leaving Frank ONeil to ride Negofol Negofol won and Oversight finished third Recalls Bromo's Victory At Woodbine. ENGLISH VIEW OF WHISK BROOM In my previous notes on the coming threeyearold reference has more than once been made to the Americanbred Whisk Broom the chestnut son of Broomstick and Audience which carried Harry Payne Whitneys colors so creditably during the season that when the handicapping eouiniitee issued the Free Handicap for twoyearolds on the eve of the New ¬ market Honghtou Meeting the American colt was put on the same mark 118 pounds as Admiral Hawkc receiving five pounds from Lemberg and eight pounds from Nell Gow There was much to like about this usefullooking chestnut when stripped for the Holiday Two YearOld Stakes at Sandown Parks August Bank Holidav fixture and good judges marked him down as the likely recipient of a tine race when more thoroughly trained lie was not at all fancied but his trainer rightly conjectured that a little acquaintance with the business of racinif would be beneficial to the colt and lit finishing fourth he did better than the hot favorite Flori ¬ culture which was left as of course was the money of his backers at the starting post which the bookmakers ought to call the Tom Tiddlers ground for there was sunk all the money invested ou 4K other candidates for races during the past season with a fair proportion of good favorite among them That the clever American trainer Joyner had calculated aright was demonstrated at Whisk Brooms next outing for that eyeopener at Samfown Park had brought him on immensely and when the colt was saddled on the Knavesmire at York August three weeks later he went out for the Prince of Wales Plate enjoying the full confidence of his trainer and delighted his owner who with a party of American friends was paying one of his rather infrequent visits to our race courses for II P Whitney has other attractions in the world of siwrtr by a stylish victory Whisk Irx m had something to beat that day too for those connected with Galatine were very confident concerning his chance as subsequent to the latters close fight with Admiral Ilawke referred to yesterday this son of Gallinule and Burgonet had cantered away with the llalnaker Stakes at Goodwood Now with this redoubtable Maher riding the colt the Michel Grove folk would not hear of his defeat but AVhisk Broom had the race won a long way from home Maher on Galntlne made a great effort but at the distance Whisk Brooms trainer joyfully ejaculated Theyll never catch him this time Nor did they and two lengths same was the judges verdict Wool Winders own brother WooIacomlK following Whisk Broom and Galatine past the i ost That was the American colts sole success during the season for he had been a little oft color prior to Doncaster and was not expected to beat the cracks in the Cham ¬ pagne Stakes but Joyner had got him fairly right again later In the autumn when he did quite well enough in the Middle Park and Dewhurst Plates to engender hopes that he will have a good Cghtinir chance for the Two Thousand Guineas should all go well with liim and it is wortli remembering that these Americanbred horses will be more dcclimatized in the coining season If Whisk Broom does train on sufficiently well to beat our colts in the tirst oC the classics the victory will be popular for his own ¬ ers Eton blue jacket ami brown cap are well known and respected on our courses as is the owner him ¬ self in oilier branches of sport Augur in Sport ¬ ing Life
