FIVE SHEFFIELD FAVORITES Turf wisdom had its inning at Sheffield yes ¬ terday tray five favorites winning while Scamp who captured the hurdle race was backed down from 7 to 5 to 1 The weather was perfect the track fast and the attendance large The race track seemed to have more attraction for some of the visiting politicians than the con ¬ vention venation and Tammany badges and others were conspicuous conspicuousThe conspicuous The principal event was a mile condition race in which Rudolph Urania Urbana Saint Lee and others were entered There was a hot tip out on Saint Lee and opening at 4 to 1 he was quickly backed down to 8 to 5 C Slaughter had the mount having come from St Louis to ride him Audrax Aura and Urania Urbana caused some delay at the post but the rubber snapped to a good start for all except Audrax Aura Urania Urbana made the run ¬ ning Ming followed by Fred K Slaughter lying back in third place There was no change till after the sixteenth pole when Slaughter brought up the favorite and in a driving finish beat Urania Urbana by half a length with Fred K third the same distance back Rudolph was never formidable formidableIn formidable In the opening race Loudon London the favorite who j jke joke last with a running start managed to beat Gunwad Unwed by half a length lengthSolo lengths Solo was au odds on favorite in the twoyear twofer old race Off fourth he went to the front at once winning from Tom Anderson who beat Fonclif Foci a head for the place placela paella la the seven furlong event Miss Young was always first choice with Simmons next in de ¬ mand Mandy The favorite and Glenoid Genocide were the con tenders to the stretch where the old horse was beaten and Dick Behan Bean came up He could not catch Miss Young who won by a length with Freddie L T a fair third thirdThough third Though it was Ashlands Ashland first essay over the jumps he was made favorite in the jumping race Settle Up as usual behaved badly at the post Ashland led over the first hurdle where Gratz Graft Hanly Hanky fell Shoemaker jumped it high enough to clear a house only to make a mistake at the second obstacle Scamp then went to the front and won easily easilyJennie easily Jennie June the favorite won the last race easily from Barguard Argued F Starkweather Starkest the owner of the second horse ran the winner up to 700 100 over her entered price and she was bought in for 705 Notes Of The Turf. RACING GOSSIP W C Vreeland Greenland a veteran reporterof reporter the east ¬ ern Bern turf tells the following story from observa observe ¬ tion ion of the Kingston Futurity course record of 1 08 still on the books Starter Caldwell made a mistake as to the distance of the race and sent the horses away from the fiv five and a half furlong post instead of the regular futurity mark Track superinten superintend ¬ dent Frank Clark who was one of the timers noticed the mistake and tried to remedy it but was unable to do so the horses being dispatched too promptly The record caused a good deal of comment Those who knew held their peace as it was thought that no good would result from having the race run over again The track con ditions editions were all against fast time the track being slow if not heavy from a previous rain There are any number of men in the East famil family ¬ iar liar with this little in ide aide history of Kingstons Kingston futurity record and when they speak about the best performances over that course they always give the credit to that grand filly La Tosca Tosco who carried over 120 pounds and defeated Nellie Ely in a very fast race Milwaukee Form.
