FATCHEN ATHENA DEFEATS GENTRY Joe Patchen Patch beat John R Gentry at Wash ¬ ington Kingston Park yesterday on a fast track before 6500 people Had there been betting Gentry would have been favorito favorite and the wise ones would have fallen He came here fresh from his mile in 2 03V at Eed Deed Oak while it was Patch ins first appearan appearance e of the season Naturally everything pointed to Gentry on condition while ho needed no speed The race showed that he lacked both Andrews was not sure but that his Red Oak mile might have hurt him although ho had not evidenced it The inference is that it did for he was far from himself His speed was wanting he acted footsore and did something unprecedented for him broke at the finish in both heats Joe Patchen Patch drew the pole and paced one of his oldfashioned olfaction but wonderful races He had the foot of Gentry at all times and could not have lost unless he fell down The time was not up to expectations 205l 206K The speed bits were the second quarter of the first half in 305 seconds the last quarter in 30J4 seconds and the second Quarter of the second heat in 30 seconds flat Gentry made his effort in the stretch in both heats in the first he was outpacing the black horse at the long distance when he broke and was beaten by four lengths In the second al ¬ though he was groggy all around the upper turn he responded to Andrews call in the stretch but again left his feet at tho thou last sixteenth and the black horse won by a length and a half eased just at the win There was never more than a length of daylight between them except at tho thou finish of the first heat the black horse was never headed although Gentry was on even terms when he broke in the stretch in tho thou first heat heatFour Hartford Four other events Saturday con ¬ tention tenting after Assignee had got to his horses he was bumped and sulked Thats Hats his angle angleTom angleworm Tom Gallagher the billiard player was a rac race ¬ ing King reporter of depth and observation in his day Ho and his made a trip to Indiana both days to increase what they had about the Assignee races They came away with less than they had Tom was philosophical after the turmoil He has been bumped many a time and oft Tho Theo re ¬ flections elections that como to one during the soreness from bumps creates your philosopher Tom grew reminiscent as ho tolls of what might have been but wasnt wasn't financially Assignee sulks he said Its an old trick of his When I was working in the East two years ago Tom was a reporter and doing the Metropolitan tnrf turf for me I was then sporting editor of the Tribune Billio Billion Lakeland said to me one morning con ¬ tinued tined Gallagher The public think Domino is the fastest horse in training That thief and he pointed to Assignee who was coming back from a bit of exorcise he didnt didn't relish is faster than Domino if hell run true Lakeland and the Keenes Keeners discarded Assignee because he wasnt wasn't true Truth is class and class is trying hon j esty testy regularity and ability to do great things in a pinch ft holds good with men as with horses Theres Theresa sympathy in the connection of the twain In this mood Byron McClelland Macmillan sold at a cheap figure W B and Evanatus Vanuatu He couldnt couldn't rely on them and they got his jockeys into disrepute Both amassed sense with age but both have fits still and are in the bad horso hors class There is local talk about Muskalonge Muskellunge having won the Milwaukee Derby and judicial error in the award to Prince Lief Leif Rot There isnt isn't a more healthy eye than that of Col Cool Simmons ox tant taint Ive I've seen him in action some 200 days There is no moro methodical or more correct The turfs worst enemies are the turfs verbose followers They talk with their bets sing to the tune of gain and cry to the pean pecan of loss Of course its natural Humanity is not widely wise and that part of it which turns to racing is not wiser than tho thou mob Interest rules all our affairs and warps all our corners Yet without tho thou betting incentive far above tho thou generally accepted term of gambling there wouldnt wouldn't bo much of a turf here or elsewhere Properly followed ttio trio speculation sido sid of tho thou turf is most entrancing and more intelligent Study and observation are the keys to success Holders of such keys often catch tho thou slapdash bookmaker out of lino limo This is most often tho thou case with its periodical prices The keenness of a local ring is soon tabbed1 and followed followedThere followed There was a case in point last Saturday George Rose a real good colt though his defeat of Suisun Sufis doesnt doesn't go on the tab was sold at Cincinnati and moved to St Louis by that good judge Jim Murphy He was in a soft spot yet 3 to 1 was laid agaiust against him with a more ex maidon maiden Dr Walmsly Alms a sharp favorite Of course George Rose won The carelessness that offered such a price against the George Kinney colt was not sufficiently punished Ho is by the way tho thou second Georgo George Rose One named after the courtly bookmaker it four years old a winner and a Californian in Doggie Smiths Oakland Stable Hes Hess by Throe Cheers Char ¬ ity city Tho Theo twoyearold toehold that furnishes tho thou moral for this talo talon about form and tho thou laziness of observation about it is well named on tho thou old fashioned combination sirodam sired plan He is by Georgo George Kinney Hindoo Indoor Rose and under the laws of registration should bo known to tho thou turf as George Rose II IIFigaro Figaro Friar forsooth Tuo To horso hors of a fight which Barrick Baric lost and mourned into the courts of the land and the turf hasnt hasn't bwn bwana himself since he was cut down last fall When ho is himself Figaros Friars in the shifty class Hes Hess a 140 miler and can sprint a bit though a distance is his game His 2 01 for 1 316 miles at St Louis June 12 last divided the 1895 honors of tho thou route with Patrician Figaros Friars race too was on a track no faster than Brooklyn where Patrician both were four years old equalled equaled his time Figaro Friar carried 114 pounds and Patrician 107 pounds If one is busy and sadly needs a bet one can place one in town The men who serve one laid 100 straight and 20 for place against Figaro Friar Satur Saturn ¬ day He won So did a neophyte who saw the long odds bet 5 each way on Veterinary Row ells Fonso Fonts horse and won 600 When Figaro Friar s win was announced there was a scene and only the interference of alcohol and ice water pre ¬ vented medical partnership in the profits profitsByron profits Byron McClelland Macmillan is account d a lucky turf ¬ man His luck seems to be the luck of the fel feel ¬ low who studios his business buys well sells bettor retains the best and parts with what seems tho thou best but isnt isn't McClelland Macmillan has sold some good horses Halma Alma was one He got his price Henry of Navarre Navarro was another Ho got his price again To me it seoms seams as if his mod ¬ ern Bern mistake in a sales way was about Buck Massie Massive Tho Theo colt deceived him He sold him to John Rodegap Bodega for 1COO John sold him to Jim Murphy for 5000 and thought it a good bar gaiu gain Rodegap Bodega told mo at St Louis last fall that he had cut the worth of tho thou colt in half because tho thou Chicago tracks wore closed But ho still thought Buck Massio Mansion only a good sel seal ¬ ling plater platter Murphy without turf training but a keen and intelligent man has proven the colt to bo of the first class What a lot of good horses Murphy has bought at a reasonable fig ¬ ure cure 1 Buck Massio Mansion is one SoulHo Solo another and George Rose still another anotherTheres northerners Theres Theresa Magnet Hes Hess in the great horso hors niche according to popular fancy Tho Theo colts fast The turf books abound with his speed bits Hes Hess consistent too in a fair sort of way But a champion Bosh Galon Gallon Brown for Burns Waterhouse Warehouse the Californian turf firm wanted Magnet at 10000 Dan Honig Hong refused the price He has a sentimental notion toward the Belmont bred colt Then too he likes that boy of his whos whops bad today and good tomorrow Garner The kid loves Magnet and goes to tears when a prico rico on tho thou colt is talked of To my notion Galon Gallon Brown is a keen judge of a horse He has a good one in his stable Libertine He can beat Magnet at any angle of the turf Libertines less than groat goat at that But not much less Then too hes hems not understood as the boy denominated the carbolic acid bottle just be ¬ fore bed partaken and died F H Hickok Hick the present Hickok Hick Stable paid 5000 for Magnet on tho thou home ground Blemton Benton Hes Hess Belmont bred Dan Honig Hong got him for a little moro than half that price Ho got a bargain But at the same time he got less than a great horso hors If Magnet is kept busy early in the race and given a tussle late he is one of your pass it up kind His 1896 racing is much better though than that of last year Tho Theo improve ¬ ment meant
