THE 1896 KENTUCKY DEEBY DERBY WINNER BEN BRUSH BEN BRUSHS BRUSH CLOSE CALL CALLBen Allen Ben Brush won the twentysecond twenty Kentucky Derby today by a mere nose and after a desper deeper ¬ ate drive with Ben Eder Edger It was a startling bit of racing from the eighth polo homo In it jockeyship jockeys told too It was natural for Simms Sims to outride Tabor and he did it Brush showed the gameness of a great colt a little soft in beating Ben Edor Edo a less great colt but a much better conditioned one The stretch battle was all there was to the Derby After First Mate had led gayly gaily for threequarters treasurers the real race began It seemed certain that Ben Eder Edger would win at the stands end but Simms Sims kept Bram Abram ¬ bles bales great son going long enough to just land the Derby Ben Brush was a stout favorite at 1 to 2 He was the tenth favorite to land the Kentucky Derby The local colts were disap diaper ¬ pointments ointments Ulysses Brown Dicks colt was in the wake of the field all the way and First Mate gave it up when the screws were set Semper Simper Ego ran his honest best against two bet tpr pr ones LILLIAN E BUNS A FAST RACE A crowd of 4000 was at Sheffield yesterday the fine weather a fairly good card and tho thou pros ¬ pects pets of speculating on the Kentucky Derby being the drawing cards The track was fast and a full second was knocked off the Indiana record for seven furlongs by Lillian E While at the post Sullross Soulless kicked Caywood Cawed who was on Lismore Limo just about tho thou same place where he broke his leg at New Orleans inflicting such severe injuries that tho thou boy had to bo carried away awayTho away Tho Theo seven furlongs condition race which was the event of the day was robbed of much its interest by tho thou scratching of Red Skin and Aunt Lida Linda only five going to tho thou post Lillian E with her light impost of 88 pounds was made favorite but Lismore Limo and Sullross Soulless were strongly supported There was a long delay at the post owing to the accident to Caywood Cawed but they were dispatched at the first attempt Sullross Soulless getting the best of the start Lismore Limo led at the quarter but Lillian E soon went to the front and led into the stretch with Inspector Hunt second and Sullross Soulless third At the eighth polo Inspector Hunt had his head in front but Lil Lila ¬ lian lain E admirably ridden by Hathersall Heathers came again and stalling off Freemans Freeman rush on Sull Scull ¬ ross won by a short head headOnly headily Only two other favorites were successful Forerunner lasting just long enough to get home in the first race and May Galop Gallop who had it all her own way in the last In the second race for threeyearolds Kamsin Amassing was an odds on favorite in spite of his quarter crack He ran an indifferent race Panout Peanut and Sugar were the leaders till half way down the stretch when Uncle Abb Abby came with a rush and won with something to spare The Joliet party landed a good stake at the comfortable price of 10 to 1 1Hercules Hercules led all the way in tho thou hurdle race and just beat Tambio Ambo out at tho thou finish Miles Standish would have won if he had not broken down and it is doubtful if he will stand another race Taylor fell off Cunarder Unordered at tho thou last jump jumpThe jump The Sheffield programme programmed for May 9 to May 13 has been published It has six races including tho thou Derby on Saturday and five on the other days daysTho Dayton Tho Theo field for tho thou Indiana Derby to be run at Sheffield on Saturday May 9 promises to be a largo one Among those who are likely to go to the post are Muskalonge Muskellunge Uncas Uncaps Ulysses Doctor G Lottie Loftier La Salle Sale Little Thorn Blacking Brush Kamsin Amassing Onalaska Koalas Del Coronado Cau Au field Sidkel Side Inspector Hunt Panout Peanut Lillian E May Galop Gallop and Harmony There are also several doubtful starters including Excuse Big Strive Mike Kelly Millie M Don Carillo Carillon and Sayirma Syria SayirmaKamsin Kamsin Amassing Del Coronado Lillian E and May Galop Gallop all worked out tho thou mile after their races yesterday The Indiana Derby.
