Theodore O’Hara wrote the poem, "Bivouac of the Dead," in 1847 to commemorate Kentucky soldiers killed in the Mexican War. It was later engraved on the Kentucky military monument in Frankfort Cemetery(1850), the portal to the Arlington Cemetery, and other military memorials around the country, becoming an enduring national elegy for fallen American soldiers. 1898

This item was published in 1898 and digitized in 2002 by the University of Kentucky Special Collections and Digital Programs. The original work was written by Theodore O’Hara (1820-1867), and its collector was George Washington Ranck (1841-1900).
