Abstract

Geology of the Pitman Oil Pool is a survey of the land and oil pool discovered in Greene County, Kentucky. Within this work is all of the recorded data and information gathered in regards to the oil, topography, geology and paleontology of the surrounding area.

Biography/History

Willard Rouse Jillson was born in Syracuse, New York in 1890. After graduation in 1912, Jillson began work as a field geologist. He became an oil investor, with his family, in the fields of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. In 1917 he married and moved to Kentucky. In 1919 he was appointed to the position of commissioner of geology and then in 1920 he was appointed to the Sixth Kentucky Geological Survey. Jillsen also held the position of State Geologist.

From 1947-1951, Jillson taught geology at Transylvania University. He resigned in 1951 to persue other his personal studies. During this time, he published many works on his studies and surveys of Kentucky's geology and local history.

Willard Rouse Jillson died on October 4, 1975 and is buried in the Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Scope and Content

Willard Rouse Jillson Geology of the Pitman Oil Pool in Kentucky contains three copies of Jillson's work. The copies include a preliminary draft, with original photographs, a copy of page proofs and a printers copy. The work contains geological and historical documentation of the Pitman Oil Pool in Greene County, Kentucky.
