Jillson, a native of Syracuse, New York, graduated from Syracuse University in 1912. He later attended the University of Washington where he became a geography instructor and received his M.S. in 1915. During World War I he became an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky and was later appointed State Geologist for the Kentucky Geological Survey by Governor A. O. Stanley. During his administration Jillson authorized and published new maps of each of Kentucky's 120 counties. He served concurrently as Kentucky's State Park Commissioner and established the first four state parks. He was the author of several books on Kentucky geology and many bibliographies, pamphlets, and articles on history, geology, and geography.
This collection is comprised of maps, photographs, and papers of Jillson, State Geologist of Kentucky from 1919 to 1931.
