Professor. Dr. Payne was head of the chemistry department at Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky, 1923-1942. He delivered papers on Dr. Robert Peter and Dr. Samuel Brown, to the Division of History of Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Both Peter and Brown were members of the medical department faculty at Transylvania in the early nineteenth century. Peter also served on the faculty of the Kentucky School of Medicine in Louisville and as a chemistry professor at Kentucky University (later the University of Kentucky).

The collection contains Payne's papers, research notes on the scholars and copies of letters written to Dr. Robert Peter from different correspondents around the country. Also present are photographs of portraits of Peter and Brown.
