Y ..69. Procedure A Twenty Hampshiresired crossbred lambs were randomly allotted to two groups of 10 each at birth. One group received creep free-choice and the other only nursed their dams. All lambs were bedded on tobacco stems so that the milk-fed lambs would A not consume their bedding. The ewes were fed separately. Feed consumption and i weight gains were measured on all lambs. Rumen samples were taken from each lamb every two weeks to form a composite sample for starch andcellulose digestionpn vitro. These values were compared to values obtained from composite samples from lambs 10, 12, 14, and 16 weeks old fed a conventional fattening ration (control). Results and Discussion The creep-fed lambs nearly tripled their feed consumption every 14-day period (Table 1). After the first 14-day period the creep lambs gained considerably faster than the milk-fed lambs for the remainder of the study. As noted in Table 2 the percentage cellulose digested was similar to that digested by the creep lambs and the i controls. The lambs receiving milk only were consuming some of the tobacco stems used for bedding. After they were housed on asphalt for 14 days the starch digestion averaged 6.4% and cellulose 11. 5%. This indicated that the consumption of the tobacco stems had not affected starch digestion but had contributed to the development of cellulose digesting activity. Furnishing a creep freechoice promoted development of starch and cellulose digesting activity in preweaned lambs as early as 14 days of age. _ Table 1.
