Biography/History

U.S. Senator. James, a native of Crittenden County, Ky, became a lawyer in 1891, following in his father's footsteps. He involved himself in Kentucky Democratic politics at an early age. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903-1911. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 1912, and served as permanent chairman of the 1912 and 1916 Democratic National Conventions. He died in 1918, while campaigning for a second term.

Scope and Content

The papers are a microfilm copy of letters, a broadside, a photograph, and a biographical sketch of Ollie M. James. The letters consist of two from Woodrow Wilson, one from Joseph Tumulty, and one from A.S. Burleson. Wilson congratulates James on a campaign victory (1912) and on a "remarkable speech." The broadside announces a James speech.
