Biography/History

Anne Clay was the daughter of Henry Clay, Jr, who was considered the most promising of the famous Kentucky statesman's five sons. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, then was killed at the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. Anne married her cousin, Henry Clay McDowell, May 21, 1857.

Scope and Content

Originals are the property of the Henry Clay Foundation. This is a collection on microfilm of diaries and letters written by Anne Smith Clay McDowell, granddaughter of Henry Clay. The diaries date from April 21 to July 2, 1851 and from Feb. 1 through Feb 17, 1858. The letters, which are copies, date from Aug. 24, 1857 to Feb. 1, 1858. These writings are primarily about the daily events in Anne's life, including social calls. An entry in her diary for June 26, 1851 describes a journey she made with her family from their home in Louisville to her grandparents' home, Ashland, near Lexington, Ky.
