Scope and Content

A journal of events kept by Major Nathan Parker from September 21, 1861 to June 20, 1862. Part of the journal is missing, and some of the entries are in code. Parker, an officer in the Confederate Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, gives accounts of daily life on the road and in camp, the capture of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Corinth. He traveled extensively through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, and provides descriptions of people, places, and the weather. Parker records his reason for fighting for Southern independence, and includes roster lists, mess expenses, worries about his family, and bouts with the measles and other illnesses. Two newspaper clippings, one from 1866 and one from 1891, are included in the journal. Both deal with the life and death of Parker.
