Abstract

The Appalachian Community Fund records contain materials concerning grants, organizational documentation, photographs, and financial information 1977-2008, predominantly documenting 1986-2005.

Biography/History

Located in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Appalachian Community Fund (ACF) was founded in 1987 to bring new resources for grant funding to groups working for progressive social change in Central Appalachia (East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and West Virginia), and to be a sustainable resource base for community organizing and social change work in this region. In their 20-year history, they have awarded over $5 Million to more than 300 organizations working for justice. ACF pools resources from many sources including individuals, businesses, and foundations in order to provide critical financial support needed to help low-income people organizing themselves to address systemic problems of poverty, racism, and social inequity in their own communities and neighborhoods.

The ACF is governed by a regional board of directors made up of community leaders and residents of the four-state area in which they fund. Grantees, donors, allies, and board members make up the ACF network and community which helps guide their work and community-controlled grantmaking.

The ACF funds and encourages grassroots social change in Central Appalachia. ACF works to build a sustainable base of resources to support community-led organizations seeking to overcome and address issues of race, economic status, gender, sexual identity, and disability. As a community-controlled fund, ACF offers leadership to expand and strengthen the movement for social change through its practices and policies.
