The principal investigator for the Survey was Roscoe Giffin from the Berea College Department of Sociology. Giffin's survey studies the participation of Appalachian migrants in social activities in Cincinnati, Ohio, and their adjustment to the demands of urban life.
Materials consist of questionnaires from the Southern Appalachian Studies Urban Survey, correspondence concerning SAS-sponsored Urban Adjustment Workshops, and related manuscript studies by its staff on Appalachian out-migration.
Materials include Giffin's correspondence documenting the planning of the Cincinnati project; correspondence of SAS Administrative Director Willis D. Weatherford, Sr. with Perley F. Ayer, Executive Director of the Council of the Southern Mountains, detailing planning of the Urban Adjustment Workshops (sponsorship of which appears to have shifted from SAS to the Council over this period); materials relating to a separate urban planning study conducted for SAS by Aelred J. Gray of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which are comprised of completed survey sheets, correspondence, and Gray's drafts of a chapter for THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN REGION: A SURVEY; and miscellaneous other manuscript papers, clippings, and publications.
Folder list; unpublished inventory/register.
