Scope and Content

This collection was created to support the Appalachian Center's mission, which focuses on the appreciation and preservation of southern Appalachian folk culture. The bulk of materials were recorded by the Center's director, Loyal Jones.

Materials consist of audio and video recordings of traditional music performances at Berea College, along with speeches, lectures, oral history interviews, and folk tales relating to southern Appalachian culture.

Included are sound recordings of live performances of folk and country musicians at Berea College, the bulk of which occurred during the college's annual folk music festival. Artists include the Cumberland Rangers, Doc Hopkins, Buell Kazee, Bradley Kincaid, Asa Martin, Artus Moser, John Jacob Niles, Pender Rector, Jean Ritchie, Phillip "Doc" Roberts, Sparky Rucker, Fred Stanley, and Billy Ed Wheeler, among others. Also present are sound recordings of lectures, including several given by Harry Caudill, Wilma Dykeman, Gurney Norman, Leonard Roberts, James Stokely, and Cratis Williams.

Various oral history recordings, some of which were prepared for Appalachian Studies classes at Berea College, are present. These include interviews relating to coal mining, gospel music, and folk tales. Miscellaneous recordings of Regular Baptist church services are also part of the collection.
