The Conference on Women's Health Care Issues, Inc. was organized in mid-1983 and incorporated in January 1984 as a completely volunteer organization to conduct conferences and otherwise educate the public about women's health care issues. Conferences on women's health issues were held in Louisville consecutively from 1983 to 1991 and covered a wide range of health issues and concerns. The first years stressed common issues such as health care costs, menopause, issues in conception and contraception, teen-age pregnancy, estrogen therapies, and health care for medically indigent women. In 1985 special emphasis was given to the older woman and grief therapy and in 1986 the theme was on self-empowerment. The entire 1987 conference emphasized mother-daughter issues, including genetic factors in breast cancer, motherhood in various family configurations, and the elderly parent. Issues and concerns of women at midlife were the focus of the 1988 conference. The 1989 program covered AIDs, teen pregnancy, domestic abuse, and substance abuse. The next year, the program turned to health care as a profession for women, and various ethical issues in medicine. The final conference in 1991 emphasized "high touch in a high tech world, including alternative health programs such as massage, acupuncture, stress reduction and wellness eating habits." The conference organizers met for the last time in 1993 and the financial books were closed in 1996.
This collection consists of all organizational papers, minutes, financial records, correspondence, mailing lists and conference programs of the Conference on Women's Health Care Issues, Inc., which existed from 1983 to 1993 for the purpose of presenting conferences and other educational forums on women's health care issues.
