Biography/History

Hutchins, a native of Northfield, Massachusetts, was educated at Oberlin College (A.B., 1923) and Yale University (M.A., 1933). Having worked in China as an undergraduate, Hutchins returned there around 1925 as an instructor and later representative of the American trustees of the Yale-in-China Association's educational mission (l925 - 1939). In 1939 he was appointed president of Berea College to succeed his father, William J. Hutchins, and served until his retirement in 1967.

Important events of Hutchins's tenure included institutional reorganization and curricular development, a five-fold increase in the College's endowment, and the readmission of black students to Berea following a 1950 modification of the Day Law by the Kentucky General Assembly.

Scope and Content

These are official records and personal papers of the fifth president of Berea College, Francis S. Hutchins.

Records here generally document Francis Hutchins's administration as well as his years with Yale-in-China.

The bulk of administrative records prior to 1960 have been lost, and documentation for that period is relatively light.

Folder list; unpublished inventory/register.
