This collection of journalist and social critic H.L. Mencken was developed by Victor L. Reno and given as a bequest to the University of Louisville in 1968. It contains all published editions with many signed by Mencken,and books to which Mencken either contributed or edited. Journals include complete runs of American Mercury and Smart Set. Thre are also scrapbooks and clippings, photographs, memorabilia, and seventy typescript, signed letters from Mencken to Reno written between 1943 to 1948. There are also a number of later letters written or signed by Mencken's secretary Rosalind Lohrfinck. Particularly notable are an exceptionally rare review copy, in original boards, of Ventures into Verse (1903), and a bound typescript of of articles gathered and annotated in Mencken's hand. This text was intended as a second volume of his Chrestomathy, but never published.
