Biography/History

In 1763, Richard Henderson, a prominent lawyer from Virginia, formed a land company to settle the area of Kentucky bounded by the Cumberland, Ohio, and Kentucky rivers. Notable explorers such as Daniel Boone were hired to scout the wilderness. In 1774, Henderson established the Louisa Company with Thomas Hart, William Johnston, John Williams, John Lutrell, and Nathaniel Hart. The company was again reorganized and named the Transylvania Company in January 1775. Later that same year, the company signed a treaty with the Cherokee at Sycamore Shoals on the Wautaga River in present-day Tennessee, thus securing Kentucky land south of the Ohio and west of the Kanawha River. Shortly after the Transylvania Company placed advertisements in Virginia and North Carolina newspapers, the settlement of Kentucky began.

Scope and Content

This document is a "list of Lands Divided between the original proprietors of Richard Henderson & Co their Heirs, Divisees, & assignees." The names of each oroginal proprietor and the acreages assigned are listed. The company was better known as the Transylvania Land Company.
