Joseph Petro is a painter and illustrator who studied fine art in Lexington, Kentucky, at Transylvania University under Victor Hammer. During graduate studies at the University of Cinncinati College of Medicine he developed his skills as a medical illustrator. In addition to medical illustration, Petro is known for his portraits, murals, and equine art. He taught at Loyola University of Chicago in Rome, Italy before joining the faculty of Transylvania University in 1978. In 1992 he designed the Kentucky bicentennial postage stamp for the United States Postal Service.
This is a collection of materials about the works of artist, Joseph Petro. Included are sketches and prints of medical and equine subjects, photographs of his works, exhibit catalogs, and collected information on the Kentucky bicentennial postage stamp depicting My Old Kentucky Home. Also present is a notebook entitled "Guide to the Regional Dissection of the Human Body" which contains Petro's drawings and notes which apparently relate to his coursework in anatomy at the University of Cinncinati College of Medicine (1954-1955
