In 1902 she established the Hindman Settlement School in Knott County, Kentucky with her colleague, May Stone. In 1913 Pettit founded the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County. This collection includes correspondence of Katherine Pettit from the Hindman Settlement School, and a commonplace book kept by Pettit which contain her observations and other information about the Hindman and Pine Mountain schools.
