Biography/History

The Smith and Wilson families were among the early settlers in Bourbon and Montgomery Counties. The Wilson ancestry is traced to Henry Wilson who came from Scotland and accompanied the Clark Expedition to Ohio. Ancestors of Enoch Wilson's wife were the Dedman and Bryant families who settled in Fayette and Jessamine counties.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of letters to Enoch Smith Wilson as well as papers relating to the Smith, Wilson, Dedman and Bryant families of Kentucky. Most of the letters deal with cattle sales, speculation in mules, particularly from West Indian trade and profits to be made in Missouri cattle and land. A few family letters are included and some notes and clippings on the Smith-Wilson and the James Dedman family (Wilson's wife). Both families were prominent in the settlement of central Kentucky and Kenton County. There is also a certificate from Governor J. J. Crittenden appointing James Dedman (Enoch Smith Wilson's father-in-law) as sheriff of Kenton County.
