Scope and Content

Donald M. Fiene, recently retired as professor of Slavic languages at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is recognized as the first biblographer of J. D. Salinger. He created controversy by teaching Salinger in Louisville, Kentucky, public schools in the 1950s. During a long career Fiene has also developed numerous bibliographies including Alexander Solzhenitsyn: an international bibliography of writings by and about him (1973), R. Crumb checklist of work and criticism (1981) and Vonnegut in the USSR (1988). Fiene has corresponded with writers such as Salinger and Vonnegut and has also written extensively on Russian language and culture. The eclectic collection of his papers at the University of Louisville includes an unpublished manuscript on Russian Icons, "Iconography of Divine Wisdom," with over two hundred color transparencies of rare Russian icons, and an extensive work in progress, the manuscript of "Getting Through Life," Fiene's autobiography.
