Scope and Content

Materials consist of miscellaneous clippings, papers, letters, photographs, and publications relating to Clay, his descendants, or to his home, White Hall in Madison County, Kentucky. Publications were collected from diverse sources by Berea College library staff.

The collection consists predominantly of clippings relating to Clay's life, his career as an ambassador and abolitionist, and his relationship with Berea College and its founder, John G. Fee. Documents include Clay letters to Abby Hutchinson (1 item; 1848), Louis Marshall (1 item; 1898), and William H. Evarts (1 item; 1898); a letter (n.d.) to Clay from B. F. Sanford of Kenton County concerning freeing slaves in Kentucky; and a note (1898) from Clay praising Berea College. Also present are a photographic portrait (1862) of Clay and several albumen prints of White Hall, his home in Madison County. Other items include student and staff papers on Clay and miscellaneous correspondence between library staff and persons interested in Clay.
