Stewart, a native of Scotland, was educated there, in Canada, and in the United States. He was ordained a Baptist minister in Canada in 1859. During his career he served as president of three other educational institutions and as a professor of classical languages. He was named president of Berea College in 1890, a period in the College's history marked by adverse political pressures and a suspension of financial growth. He resigned the presidency in 1892 but continued as a member of the Board of Trustees until 1896.
This collection consists of fragmentary correspondence, clippings, copies of speeches, and other materials, relating to the second president of Berea College.
The collection consists predominantly of photocopied materials which were assembled to produce a fuller reference source on Stewart's presidency. Included are fragmentary correspondence of John G. Fee with E. P. Fairchild; statements made by Board of Trustees members concerning the hiring and, subsequently, the resignation of Stewart; a copy of Stewart's inaugural address; copies of clippings concerning Stewart's career and death; and a copy of Stewart's presidential report to the Board of Trustees for the 1890 - 1891 school year.
KYSX078-A supplies further information on the collection of which this subgroup is a part.
