Scope and Content

Although a portion of the autographed letters may have been directed to Berea College personnel, the provenance of others is completely unknown. Library staff have also in many cases removed letters from other collections.

Materials consist of autographed letters or other documents signed by persons of some literary, political, or other historical note. These were compiled by Berea College library staff from a wide variety of sources and, typically, only a single letter or signature is present for a particular figure.

In general, autographs represent historically significant figures, apart from persons associated with Appalachia or those who have been employed in any capacity by Berea College. In the latter cases, letters are filed elsewhere.

Examples of persons for whom autographs are present include Louisa May Alcott, Susan B. Anthony, John Buchan, John J. Crittenden, Jefferson Davis, Mamie Eisenhower, William Lloyd Garrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Helen Hayes, Julia Ward Howe, Thomas H. Huxley, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John J. Pershing, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Edwin M. Stanton, Booker T. Washington, and Alexander Woolcott.
