Biography/History

Thomas L. Smith was married to Lyne Starling Pepper Smith, and was the son-in-law of Robert Perry Pepper, prominent Kentucky whiskey distiller. Smith served as an Army cartographer in the Philippine Islands in 1903 and 1904. An amateur photographer, he printed cyanotypes and brown prints of island scenes directly onto his stationery.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of one hand-colored albumen portrait of Robert P. Pepper and ten letters. The letters are from Thomas L. Smith to his wife, Lyne Starling Pepper Smith, daughter of Robert P. Pepper. The letters contain examples of cyanotype and Van Dyke brown print photographs. Both types of photographic prints could be made directly on regular typing paper, and after developing, they could be used as stationary. The letters describe Smith's work on a cartographic survey mission for the U.S. Army on the Philippine island of Siassi in late 1903 and early 1904.
