Scope and Content

This is a legal document written October 4, 1831, attesting the death and heirs of Joseph White, of Rockbridge County, Virginia. According to the document, White died in 1816 while on a journey to Kentucky. He left as heirs his widow, Ann, and six "infant children," then all under twenty-one years of age. In 1831 the two youngest children, Eliza and William, were still under twenty-one. Two of White's sons, John and Zechariah, had died in the years since the elder's death. At the time this document was written, Ann White lived with Eliza, William, and another daughter, Hannah, in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The remaining child, Ann White Caldwell, lived with her husband in Christian County, Kentucky.
