The Strater Brothers Tobacco Company of Louisville manufactured several popular brands of chewing and smoking tobacco. The Burley Tobacco Company purchased Strater Brothers in 1912. Following the purchase, the company became known as the Strater Brothers branch of the Burley Tobacco Company.
The Strater Brothers Tobacco Company records comprise correspondence, contracts, trademark certificates, insurance policies, tax returns, account books, check stubs, deposit slips, vouchers, and bank statements, relating to the company's operations as an independent entity and as a branch of the Burley Tobacco Company. The records reflect the company's relationships with suppliers and distributors; the Burley Tobacco Company; the United States government, the Kentucky state government, and the City of Louisville; and trade associations such as the Trade Mark Association of Plug Tobacco Manufacturers. The Burley Tobacco Co. files series consists of correspondence and legal documents, which illuminate the business connections between the Burley Tobacco Co. and Strater Brothers Tobacco Co.
The Classified business files series consists of business correspondence, bills, receipts, and contracts, which document the Strater Brothers' interactions with various companies. The series is arranged alphabetically by company. Some of the notable companies represented in the business files are: American Can Company, Banner Transfer Company, H. L. Boatwright and Company, Kentucky and Virginia Leaf Tobacco Company, J. B. Speed and Company, and J. W. Teasdale and Company.
