Governor Charles Slaughter Morehead served in office from 1855-1859 as an affiliate of the American ("Know-Nothing") Party. Originally from Nelson County, KY, Morehead resided in Franklin County. His occupation was a Lawyer. Governor Morehead is noted for having the Geological Survey of KY completed. He enlarged and improved the State penitentiary. Morehead also began funding an annual State Fair to encourage agricultural production. After completing his term as Governor, Charles Morehead was imprisoned for 4 months in 1861 for anti-administration sympathies.
