Biography/History

Governor Lazarus W. Powell served in office from 1851-1855 as a Democrat. Originally from Henderson County, KY, Powell remained a resident of that county. His occupation was a Lawyer. During his term, Lazurus W. Powell successfully advocated initiation of a geological survey. He was able to pass a tax increase to improve the common schools. Powell also served as U.S. Senator from 1858-1865.
