Biography/History

The Project was a two-year study funded by the United Presbyterian Church in the United States and the Presbyterian Church in the United States, conducted by members of the faculty of Western Kentucky University, and directed by WKU Sociology professor Hart W. Nelson. Its purpose was to collect sociological data on Appalachian Presbyterians through survey interviews with parishioners, ministers, clerks of sessions, church school superintendents, and teachers.

Scope and Content

Materials consist of project reports, raw data, and related materials which detail this survey of Presbyterians in the Appalachian states of Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Materials provide documentation of Project survey methods and data and include printed WKU Research Reports which incorporate survey data in their analyses; coding instructions which detail the structure of the survey and include samples of forms employed; IBM cards, presumably used for data analyses; completed interview schedules for each of the states except North Carolina; and miscellaneous reprints of publications explaining sampling and methods of statistical analysis.
