Bower, A. W. Fortune, and others, were outside the traditions of the college and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This event was nationally publicized by the conservative Christian Church periodical THE CHRISTIAN STANDARD, and various church leaders put pressure on the College of the Bible Board of Trustees to investigate the matter. The result of the investigation was the complete exoneration of the faculty members involved. Financial support of both institutions by Christian Church members was for a time significantly reduced as a result of this "trial".These are student papers, correspondence, and manuscript histories relating to the general history and development of Transylvania University, and particularly to the heresy trial of 1917. Heresy trial materials (1912-1919) include correspondence of Transylvania and College of the Bible President, R. H. Crossfield; professors, William C. Bower, and A. W. Fortune; College of the Bible Board of Trustee members; and numerous Christian Church ministers. Manuscript statements of the principals prepared for the investigation, copies of THE CHRISTIAN STANDARD articles, and other clippings are also present. Other materials present relate to the institutional history of Transylvania. Included are lists of presidents, alumni, and early endowments; transcriptions of various early documents relevant to the college's history; manuscript student and faculty papers on university history; and miscellaneous newsclippings. The bulk of these materials, apart from the newsclippings, are from the twentieth century. The earliest newsclippings date from 1824 and consist of announcements of Transylvania University graduation exercises which appeared in several eastern newspapers. Unpublished catalog of holdings. Condition of material: fair (acid damage). Variant title: Transylvania University. History.
