Biography/History

Historian. John Wilson Townsend graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1906. Soon after he began writing books and articles about Kentucky history. His second wife was Grace Cole.

Scope and Content

These accessions contain the papers of Kentucky historian, John Wilson Townsend. Letters to his second wife, Grace Cole, were written before their marriage in 1915 (1VF63M160). A scrapbook contains clippings and memorabilia relating to William "King" Solomon, hero of the 1833 cholera epidemic in Lexington, Kentucky, and author James Lane Allen (1M54M51). There is a typescript by Townsend entitled "A forgotten Kentucky essayist: Ambrose Barbour, 1822-1852," (1M53M120), and a draft of an unpublished biography of Irvin S. Cobb (1M73M3). The microfilm (1F50M-55) is a copy of the scrapbook.
