Scope and Content

These holograph and typescript letters written by William Butler Yeats were collected in honor of Richard Morgan Kain. One letter to Nugent Monck (1878-1958) June 23, 1912, regards the production of Yeats' play The Countess Cathleen (1892). A series of letters to Augusta Persse, Lady Gregory (1852-1932) January 26, [1926], February 4, 1926, May 22, 1930, and April 18, 1932, and one from Lady Gregory to him, February 6, 1926, discusses their shared interest in the Abbey Theatre and the controversy over the Hugh Lane pictures, a group of paintings bequesthed by the nephew of Lady Gregory to the National Gallery in Dublin but claimed by the gallery's counterpart in London. The final letter is from Yeats to a Mrs. Gough, May 29, 1932, regarding a table at Coole bequeathed to him by Lady Gregory. .
