Scope and Content

This is the working collection of British historian of film and theater Roger Manvell. Manvell authored definitive biographies of Ellen Terry, Sarah Siddons, and Charlie Chaplin. He produced texts on Shakespeare and the British theater, edited the first International Encyclopedia of Film (1972), and developed the concept of film as a discipline with monographs on film music, movement, animation, and design. He studied and wrote on the history of cinema throughout Europe and later on television and broadcasting. Manvell also collaborated with Heinrich Fraenkel (1897- ) on German cinema and the history of the Third Reich. The Manvell collection at the University of Louisville includes all of his works, his research library, and files with research notes, correspondence, and contracts concerning his publications. His correspondence files also include letters from film and theater directors, producers, and actors such as John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, and Deborah Kerr. Roger Manvell also collected an extensive archive of film stills to illustrate his books. The photographs reflect the international breadth of his work with stills from American and European films, documentaries, filmed productions of Shakespeare, and rare Stalin-era Russian film stills.
