Abstract

The Collection of glass negatives Seventy-eight glass plate negatives that include images of Leon Frankel's friends and family and Lexington houses, circa 1915.

Biography/History

Little to nothing is known about the origin of these glass negatives. Items 1-37 were found in a box with a handwritten note stating that the images were from the "Frankel family." In several of the images, Leon Frankel's architectural firm is identified. Items 38-67 were found in a box with no note or identification but several of the images also have Frankel architectural firm identified. Items 68-78 were found in a box with a handwritten note, "probably by the late Alfred M. Peter sent to University Archives by photographer at Agricultural Experiment Station."

Leon Kaufman Frankel graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1900. Frankel was a professor of Machine Design in the college of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky from 1903-1919. Frankel along with Dean Paul Anderson were the architects of the Chemistry Building and Kastle Hall, which was built in 1910 and is located on the University of Kentucky campus. Frankel resigned from his position at the university in order to pursue his architectural and engineering work full time. Frankel and John H. Curtis formed the architectural and engineering firm of Frankel and Curtis. Frankel and his firm Frankel and Curtis, went on to work closely with the university as an architect, engineer, and consultant for many other buildings on campus. Frankel was a member of the University of Kentucky's alumni association executive committee for 32 years. Leon Kaufman Frankel died on November 27, 1949.

Alfred M. Peter was born in Lexington, Kentucky on May 25, 1857. He attended the University of Kentucky where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate. Dr. Peter became an instructor at the University of Kentucky in 1876.
