Biography/History

Governor Luke P. Blackburn served in office from 1879-1883 as a Democratic Party affiliate. Originally from Woodford County, Blackburn resided in Jefferson County. His occupation was a Doctor. Blackburn was renowned for his medical work in cholera and yellow fever epidemics. As Governor, Luke P. Blackburn was a strong advocate of prison reform. He issued numerous pardons, and pushed for construction of a new penitentiary.
