Biography/History

Robert Maynard Hutchins, the second son of Berea College President William J. Hutchins, was educated at Yale University, served as the Dean of its Law School from 1928 - 1929, and as President of the University of Chicago from 1930 - 1945. He subsequently directed Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. (1947 - 1974), was Associate Director of the Ford Foundation (1951), and was President of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.

Scope and Content

Materials consist of correspondence, clippings, writings, and printed materials relating to William J. Hutchins, his family, and ancestors. Extensive genealogical materials are present as well as materials relating to Isaac Hutchins, his grandfather; Robert G. Hutchins, his father; and Robert M. Hutchins, his son.

Materials relating to Robert M. Hutchins (1899 - 1977) consist of family correspondence, copies of Hutchins's speeches, and miscellaneous memorabilia and publications. Correspondence (1928 - 1958; .4 l.f.) consists predominantly of his personal letters to his parents, William J. and Anna M. Hutchins. These relate to Robert Hutchins's family, his marriage, and to his career. Some letters of William J. Hutchins to his son and of Robert Hutchins's first wife, Maude Phelps Hutchins, (later McVeigh), are also present.

Other materials include congratulatory letters received by William J. Hutchins on his son's appointment to the Presidency of the University of Chicago (ca. .4 l.f., 1929); copies of Robert M. Hutchins's essays, addresses, and lectures (.4 l.f., 1934 - 1950); publications (.4 l.f.); and fragmentary notebooks from Hutchins's years as a student.

Materials relating to Robert G. Hutchins (1838 - 1921), consist of correspondence, essays, and miscellaneous papers. Correspondence relates chiefly to Hutchins's leaving Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1886 and to his years at Oberlin College (1886 - 1888). Essays, addresses, and compositions are also present and were apparently written by Hutchins during the 1850s.

Genealogical materials (1878 - 1953) include memoranda books (1944 - 1953) of William J. Hutchins; letters (1878 - 1880) of Isaac T. Hutchins to his son, Robert G. Hutchins; miscellaneous genealogical notes relating to the Hutchins family; and memorabilia.
