Biography/History

Writer Frances Lathrop (Smith) Dugan Shine (1903-1977) worked as an assistant archivist in Special Collections in the Margaret I. King Library of the University of Kentucky. The granddaughter of Gilbert Hinds King, Shine was an active member of the Kentucky Library Association, and served as a president of the League of Women Voters. She published several historical articles and books such as Bluegrass Craftsman: Being the Reminiscences of Ebenezer Hiram Stedman and Rainfall Harvest: Gilbert Hinds King and the Lexington Hydraulic & Manufacturing Company.

Scope and Content

The Frances Smith Shine papers comprise correspondence, material relating to two books, articles, and book reviews. Organized by subject, the papers document Shine's career as a librarian and author as well as her interest in politics. The bulk of papers include manuscripts, research files, and post publication files for two books: Bluegrass Craftsman: Being the Reminiscences of Ebenezer Hiram Stedman and Rainfall Harvest: Gilbert Hinds King and the Lexington Hydraulic & Manufacturing Company. Additionally, the papers' correspondence predominantly concerns business and politics, although it includes some personal letters.

The Bluegrass series consists of material relating to the topic of bluegrass and includes correspondence, notes, a bibliography, and a draft of an article More Light on the Bluegrass?. Much of the correspondence and other materials date from after the publication of her article and concern permissions for reprinting her essay.

III Bluegrass Craftsman: Being the Reminiscences of Ebenezer Hiram Stedman, 1947-1963
Scope and Contents note:

The series, Bluegrass Craftsman: Being the Reminiscences of Ebenezer Hiram Stedman, contains manuscripts, research files, and post publication files which document the research, writing, publication, and reception of the work written by Shine and Jacqueline Bull. The Manuscripts subseries includes a galley proof, a handwritten manuscript, a typewritten manuscript, the illustrations, the preface, footnotes, and the appendix. The Research Files subseries includes separate files for individual paper mills in Kentucky, research notes, correspondence concerning the book, and financial documents. The Post Publication Files subseries contains reviews, congratulatory letters, and University of Kentucky press material.

Scope and Contents note:

The Correspondence series contains Frances Smith Shine's general correspondence. Letters from Kentucky politicians of the 1950s, including Alben Barkley, Earle Clements, John Sherman Cooper, and Thruston B. Morton, form a significant portion of the business correspondence. Many of the letters deal with politics, especially food relief for India and McCarthyism, however, a small portion of personal letters are included. These political letters also include letters sent to public figures by members of her family.
