Biography/History

The Centers were funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity through Volunteers in Service to America (Vista). Volunteers staff and community interns worked at the Centers, whose goals were to provide work, study, and, in some cases, living facilities for persons interested in a community development approach to education.

Scope and Content

These subject files, correspondence, and reports relate to the establishment and administration of Outpost Education Centers, which were under the supervision of the Appalachian Volunteers in five eastern Kentucky communities. These were Carcassonne Outpost, Hanging Rock Outpost, Harlan County Outpost, Whitley County Outpost, and Grassroots Outpost.
