Abstract

These three letterbooks detail business transactions and other business-related notes for the Elkhorn Distillery between 1868 and 1872.

Biography/History

The Elkhorn Distillery was located in Paynes Depot, a small town outside of Georgetown, Kentucky. The exact dates of operation for the Elkhorn Distillery are unknown.

Scope and Content

The Elkhorn Distillery Records consist of three letterbooks.

The first letterbook, 1868 August 29 to late 1870, is inscribed by James M. Stone in Paynes Depot, Scott County, Kentucky. The letterbook contains letters from Stone to various business associates. The main subjects of the letters discuss sending money to various associates for the purchase of crops (rye, corn, etc.), the market price of crops, and requests for associates to purchase items on his behalf. Some notes include details about the date of purchase for various items, and requests for items to be shipped.

The second letterbook, 1868 November 10 to 1870 April 27, contains letters signed on behalf of Stone & Shropshire in Lexington, Kentucky. The letters were sent to various business associates in other states confirming sale and orders for barrels.

The third letterbook, 1871 November 27 to 1872 July 12, is inscribed by J.C. Cantrill in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky. The letterbook contains additional business letters signed by Stone & Shropshire. The letters contain details about the sale and number of barrels purchased.
