Biography/History

Hodges, a native of Virginia, moved to Fayette County as a boy with his family. He began his newspaper career with menial jobs at the KENTUCKY REPORTER. In 1824, in partnership with D.C. Pinkham, Hodges purchased the LEXINGTON SEMI-WEEKLY MORNING POST. Two years later, having sold his portion of the POST, Hodges launched the short-lived KENTUCKY WHIG.

Hodges moved to Frankfort and became one of the proprietors of the FRANKFORT COMMENTATOR in 1831. Within another year, he took over the publication of LIGHTS AND SHADOWS, an anti-Masonic weekly, in Louisville. He returned to Frankfort in 1833 to found the FRANKFORT COMMONWEALTH as a joint venture with Orlando Brown, and published this paper for nearly forty years. He was elected public printer by the Kentucky General Assembly the same year and was reelected for terms encompassing the next twenty-five years.

Hodges' and Brown's COMMONWEALTH supported the Whigs, Know-Nothings, and Union Party in succession. Hodges ran his private printing business and the COMMONWEALTH until 1872, and died in 1881.

Scope and Content

This is an account book kept by Albert Gallatin Hodges, prominent Kentucky printer and newspaper publisher, from 1831 to 1832. The book includes orders for printing of advertisements, books, subscription lists, and other jobs. These records concern Hodges' private enterprise only, and predate his terms as public printer for the commonwealth of Kentucky.
