Major was a prominent figure in Frankfort's antebellum leadership. Along with other leading citizens, Major was involved in organizing the Bank of Kentucky, Farmers Bank, the Capitol Hotel, the Frankfort public school system, numberous churches, various turnpike companies, and steam boat and stagecoach lines.
The multi-part ledger was kept by Samuel I. M. Major of Kentucky from 1837 to 1853. Entries include lists of debts incurred, by Major or his family members, comments on the weather, planting records, and a record of debts owed Major by other individuals. This first set of entries is indexed.
